Asian (yea sucks to be asian applying to colleges :/)

Not top 10% (probably 20%?) in a average public school

My safety school is UMass (in state). What would you say my chances are at getting into these schools out of state? What are some other schools I should consider looking at based on my scores? Any feedback is appreciated!

For UW you should be fine.

UNC, UVA and Michigan you’ll be competitive.

You’ll get into at least two of them. If you haven’t already, visit the campuses. They all have strong faculty and (likely) plenty of things to do. Michigan and UW, especially, have very strong international reputations as well.

UVA, UNC or UM is probably the best for undergrad
UM is probably the best overall for grad school
UW is probably the best overall at the PhD level

IMO

(though they are all very strong schools overall – you cannot make a bad choice here)

The only one I’ve visited so far is Wisconsin and I like it a lot. I hear that UVA UNC and UM are all beautiful and I will be visiting there soon as well. UConn is a little lower on my list. I’ve visited UMass and I like Wisconsin a lot more. The only way I see myself going to UMass is either getting in the Honors college or not getting into any other school.

I’ve read some posts on here about UNC and at first I thought it was impossible some of the things people were saying about how hard it was to get in out of state for a state university. But it seems like everyone is saying that so it must be true? Same with UVA. My brother actually went to Amherst College and at the time when he was applying for colleges, any state schools except maybe Berkeley, seemed incredibly easy to get into. But he did have a 2300 SAT score (however with virtually no ECs) so yea I guess that explains it.

UNC and UVA are going to be difficult OOS. Both heavily favor in state.

What kind of classes have you taken? Honors, AP or IB?

I’ve taken 1 AP Class so far, taking 2 more senior year. I think I’ve taken about 5-6 honors classes? 4 years of Latin as well.

I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed your UW visit. The word “amazing” is thrown around a lot, probably too much… but I think it describes the scenery at UW. Certainly the Union/Union Terrace (Mendota view…), Picnic Point, the view from the Abe statue on top of Bascom Hill all the way down State Street to the capitol building, Library Mall, the uphill-flowing river near the Engineering building, etc., are highlights.

If you didn’t go to a football game at Camp Randall, well, you missed one of the greatest traditions – the 5th Quarter. People stick around after the game to sing and dance to songs played by the loud and playful band. The most traditional school songs are “On, Wisconsin!”, “Varsity” – the singing of which rocks the stadium – and “If You Want To Be a Badger”. You can Google audio/vid files if you want to.

(I ooze bias, but UW is a great school. To be fair, all of the schools on your list are very good state schools)

I’m sad I missed going to a football game! It sounds like a lot of fun, but maybe in my future I’ll be able to go!

I have also been looking at BC. I’m going to visit next weekend but from what I’ve seen (driving by / walking through it), it too seems like a really good fit for me. What are my chances at BC? I heard they tend not to accept in state kids?

Anyone else have thoughts?
