University of Wisconsin - Madison

2 things:

1) What are my chances? 1420 SAT I (800v 620m), top 18% of class, all AP classes.

2) What are your thoughts on this school? Its really supposed to be a safety/match school for me, in case I don't get into Vassar... ;), but i'm curious as to what you guys think of UW-madison because i've heard some bad things about the undergrad academic experience... The 3 public schools i'm applying to are: UT - Austin, UVM, UW - Madison, which one would you choose?

well it depends on a couple things.
1) what state do you live in? bc im in MN and they have already started defering fabulou skids bc they reached their quota (we get reciprocity there)
2) what program are you applying to? if your applying to enginering i doubt a 620m wil cut it but if you're doing liberal arts then your 800v looks fabulous.

and for the record why did you wait? they are getting really competitive at the end of the season. I applied back in Sept and found out in Nov, and am home free. Their app is pretty simple, their essay was really tame. so send your app in ASAP. but overall ithink you'll get in. everyone ive talked to LOVES the school. i dont know anything about UT-Austin or UVA but i know that madison is a safe choice. just wondering how did you pick Madison? ts the logical choice for local kids, but i feel like youre not Midwestern...i could totally be wrong...
good luck!

Depends where you live...

If you're at least in the Midwest, it won't even be a challenge to get in. If not, it might be more difficult.

And Madison is awesome. I've played soccer at Camp Randall Stadium and done forensics on campus, besides visiting, and it's always a good time. However, if you don't drink alcohol (as I don't), then campus life might be strange. The education is fantastic, especially if you can get it cheap.

I live in Texas. I absolutely despise math, so I certainly won't be doing engineering. I'm a history/philosophy person.

Why did I wait? Because I decided at the last minute that I wanted another match school. I applied ED II to Vassar.

And yes, I enjoy drinking/partying immensely, which is one of the reasons why UW - madison piqued my interest. Also, one of my good friends is going there. Not very good reasons to apply, i know, but oh well.

What is your numerical GPA? This late in the game, UW-Madison is not a safety for people, let alone outside the top 10%. Had you applied in say, October I'd give you a high chance of admission.

Sorry to say, as much as people love throwing the phrase "if you're in the top 10%, you're in," about UW, I'll have to disagree. But that's beside the point. I say you have a 50/50.

Pluses: AP classes, decent SAT score, from Texas. (The last is a plus because of geographic diversity, NOT because it's easier to get into out of state. That honor goes to the rich east coast kids that flock to UW when they get rejected from WUSL.)

On a side note, I am getting to the point where I will violently slap someone the next time they talk about UW being 100% partying 100% of the time. It is so completely false that I get sick to the stomach. There is a very tight balance between work and play there, and this is nothing but stupidness rooting from Princeton Review's worthless rankings and stories from the 1970s. Yes, it's a "party" school, but so is every single Big Ten school (even pathetic Northwestern with their $90 sweaters, sorry don't like the place). I can agree from experience that the weekends can be crazy, but that's only if you want them to be. There is NO pressure to drink, and if you say there is you have other issues namely a nonexistent sense of self-esteem/self-control.

That will be the end of my ranting. Again, UW shouldn't be considered tough to get into for you, but it's definately not a safety at this point in the game, not for most people anyway.

Negatives: No ECs (at least from what you said), relatively low rank, late application.

I agree. I don't know if that was directed me. However... the UW homepage says 97% of those in the top 10% are admitted. However, I think this is a bit skewed because nearly every top student @ WI high schools (like #1, 2, 3s...) apply to UW-Madison, wether it is a safety or for scholarship money. I agree with everything you said, although I have met kids who turned down WashU for Madison or transfered in. While I think Madison is a "party" school, so are essentially all state schools with large student populations that are not commuters.

Sorry to be a little off topic from your conversation, but do the bastards at wisconsin admissions take pleasure in making a dam kid wait forever. I sent my application in october, it was completed 10/25. and still, no decision.

Here are my stats, i know its a bit of a reach but worth a try:
