Do I have any chance at Washington and Lee University? Also, since Washington and Lee is composed of 3 percent Asians, would they be given a boost in admissions as African Americans are at most national universities?

from some of the scattergrams and counselor comments on those--how true the comments are I don't know==but the comment was made.

"you almost have to be an athlete to be admitted"

the 3.1 gpa may be somewhat low based on what i've seen. the standardized are statistically within range.

have you visited???? it is imperative before you spend 4 years at a school or risk being miserable.

if you like urban, w&l isn't. somewhat remote from the bright lights, big city routine. very southern in feeling. very greek life like vanderbilt--some might hate. very good school academically.

^ This is why I refrain from commenting on chances threads.

None of us know exactly what a 3.1 means. Using NYC examples, a 3.1 from Stuyvesant is completely different than a 3.1 from MLK, for example. Not knowing exactly how tough your school is (average grades, SAT scores, etc) or what the breakdown of grades by classes is, it is really hard to judge your GPA. Counselors of course would have access to all of that information and thus can judge your GPA accordingly.

In addition, there is no way any of us on this board who could say how much your standardized test scores and extracurricular activities (both of which look very good btw) will make up for a lower GPA. The only people who know that for sure are the counselors who decide whether they are good enough to get you in. We also do not have access to your essay, have not done an interview with you and judged you as a person, seen how much interest you've demonstrated, etc. All these things are big parts of the LAC admissions puzzle.

So simply judging on what you've written, your scores look good, your extracurrics look good, your GPA could definitely be better but your class rank might make up for that. Are you wasting your time applying to W&L? Absolutely not. Are you a sure admit? There are no sure admits at top schools and again your GPA does leave something to be desired.

Musictoad is right in that you need to do a lot of research on the school before you decide if you want to spend four years there but you do have plenty of time to do that if you have not already. A visit and an interview are definitely good ideas. It is true that W&L is not urban but it is not out in the middle of farmland either (we are in a very nice historical little city). I still do not understand what it means to be "southern in feeling" as we do have students hailing from all over the nation and the world and I would not say the majority is southern. The only things I would consider southern about the school are a student body that is much more conservative than your typical college and that we do have a very strong greek system, though it is also different for that reason and I recommend you take a closer look at it before you write it off.

GPA is certainly one factor in the W & L admission process, but your other elements look very good. I would guess that you would be a strong candidate for admission. I would suggest that IF you really want W & L, you apply ED.
