Do I have any chance at UVA out of state? Also, it would be gladly appreciated if you could suggest solid safety, and match schools. Thank you for your help!

do you know your class rank....cause your school could just be eally rigorous with those SAT scores

Class rank would be important to know, if you're in the top 5% of so then you'd have an excellent chance. Otherwise you will look like a smart kid who doesn't do any work

Well I don't know my class rank officially, just basically through speculation. Since my school is a medical magnet high school with about 100 people per class, grades are very competitive. I would say my class rank is top 20 percent, being one of the top 20 students in a very competitive class of 100.

Anyone else have any opinions?

i don't know piano.

not gonna lie - i never heard of a 3.1 being in the top 20%. but who knows. I think you're going to have a tough time getting in :-/ - as you still really need to be at least in the top 10%.

Factors that can help/hurt you that you have no control over. Does your hs historically send a lot of kids to uva? if they do what were previosly sent students gpas + sats? (I know my high school makes public where everyone went with their gpa sats and sat2s.) Also...if lets say your high school generally gets 1 or 2 kids into uva a year - are there a lot of people applying ranked ahead of you - that will make it that much harder. but if you're the only one applying - and they have no one to compare you to, it may help.

I think I'll be the first to apply to UVA, if I feel I have a chance. The top students in my school basically focus on Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, and NYU. Our school sends about 8 percent of its students to Ivy league schools.

Anybody else want to weigh in?

Your program may be a "magnet" program, but if it only sends 8 students per year to ivies, it apparently isn't too competitive. I suppose it's possible that there's enough grade inflation that a 3.1 could put you in the top 20% of your class, but I really don't know how much that means. Your SAT score is good and you can definitely check off the EC box, but I'd guess that you won't get in. As for solid matches/safeties, I'm not sure. I'd need to know more about what you want to study, what your financial situation is like, and where you want to go to school.
