Chances at Yale or Stanford?

Hi, I'm a high school junior and I'd love to know my chances of getting into Yale or Stanford. I'm planning on majoring in political science, and I'd love to hear about any other schools that would be a good match for me.

Class rank: 10 out of 695 currently, and I get a new rank in January, which I expect to move up a couple spots, since my weighted grades for this semester have been higher than many who are ranked around me.

SAT: 2250 first try, my score breakdown was 700 Math, 750 CR, and 800 Writing. I don't plan on taking it again, but I will take the Math SAT II subject test at the end of the year, and will hopefully score around an 800. (I'm hiring a private tutor to work with me, math has always been a weakness). I'm also planning on taking the U.S. History SAT II.

I'm enrolled in every AP/honors class available. I took 4 years of Spanish (by the time I was a freshman) and am a year ahead of the majority of my class in math.

PSAT: 205, considering how things look for my state, I will probably be commended. I know National Merit would've been more impressive, but it is what it is.

Extracurriculars:

Athletics: I played varsity tennis from 9th grade to fall of 11th grade (I quit so I could focus more on debate, and it's evidently shown, since I've moved from qualifying in 1 event last year to 3 now, and the debate season isn't over yet)

Debate - I was a state qualifier in Debate last year, and this year I plan to qualify in 5 events, I am already qualified in 3. My goal is to make it to the national level competition this year. I'm also going to run for office, just not sure which office yet. I was also accepted to the Stanford Forensics Institute to be a part of their debate summer program.

Youth & Government: I had my bill passed and signed into Youth Law last year (I was one of out 4 of over 300 to do so), I received the State Distinguished Delegate Award, and I was accepted to be part of the delegation representing my state at the national conference. I'm currently running for a state office, and plan to work to attend the national conference again. I serve as treasurer of my club and plan on running for President at the end of the year.

I'm also a member of my school's Interact Club (volunteer organization), U.I.L. Academic Decathlon, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and I'm a volunteer tutor for younger kids through a program organized by my school district.

I've volunteered 5 days a week the past two summers at my local Children's Rehab Center working with children with handicaps and special needs. I'm a Teen Court Attorney (which counts as volunteering as well). I've also volunteered at my County Library and a Children's Grief Centre. I founded and am President of my temple's youth group, and I also write articles twice a month as a columnist for my local newspaper. I'm also a Social Action Representative at MissRepresentation.org (a campaign dedicated to gender equality)

Last year I received honorable mention for a well-known advocacy group's essay contest, and this year I won it in my age division. I was then invited to serve as one of the organization's youth delegates and met with several congressional offices and public policy organizations to help advance the group's efforts.

This year I was chosen as one of 2 delegates from my state (2 from each state are selected) to attend the U.S. Senate Youth Program's Washington Week, meeting Senate members, Supreme Court Justices, learning about the political system, etc. I also received a $5,000 scholarship with my acceptance.

In school I've been on the A Honor Roll since 7th grade, and a yearly recipient of the outstanding academic achievement award, I was an academic all district selection for the 2011 - 2012 varsity tennis season while maintaining a GPA in the top 2% of my class. I was my district's 3rd place girl's doubles team, and last year 1st place current events team and regional qualifier in current events.

I've also been published in a foremost global religious journal twice for my articles on faith and growing up in the U.S.

This post was a bit rushed, but essentially I'd just like to know of my chances of getting into Yale or Stanford. I'm open to hearing about any other good schools that would be matches though! Feel free to ask questions or for me to elaborate.

Also I’d be planning on applying either ED or EA, and I expect to have pretty good recs.

Considering how hard it is going into both of those schools it is always a toss up! Your resume is very impressive and since your a poly-sci major it shows you can handle the large amount of writing that the major requires! With that being said your application seems it would be strong but with those schools it is just what the admissions is looking for or already has admitted and how you fit into that match! Good luck!

blairwaldorf was not accepted at Yale. Change your profile name to Vanderwoodsen. :p

Your background/ECs and the intended major match up quite well. You should probably take subject tests in English and a language if you know one.

You should probably make it into one of the schools but with 7% admit rates nothing is guaranteed.

Thank you! Are there any other schools that would appear to match me well?

Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, Chicago, Northwestern. Rice, Wellesley, Berkeley - I think all of them are good for poli sci although I have not researched it but basing it on the type of school they are. Rice has Baker Institute, Harvard has Kennedy school (I am not sure undergrads do much there), Wellesley produced Hillary and many other Politicians. If you can stand a lot of Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, MIT might be good but most of their Poli sci is quant based.

applying ED to Stanford is your best shot. Good luck!

bump bump bump, I’d love to hear more responses and I’ll chance back!

You certainly have an extremely impressive resume, just don’t get too ahead of yourself in the coming year since you’ve still got a while until you’re actually applying. Also, just a bit of advice, you should take care to avoid coming off as someone whose done all this merely for the sake of their own resume. I don’t think you’ll have that problem but you should still be careful. Also, what part of the country are you in? Getting into Stanford is extremely difficult if you’re from the East Coast (much more so than getting into Yale if you’re from the West Coast), so don’t forget about things like that. But it certainly seems like you’re in good shape as of now. I would strongly advise taking the SATs again, if you can do better than there’s no reason not to: a 2250 doesn’t stand out at these schools but with your time and demonstrated ability it seems as if you could achieve a score that does. Also, don’t get too ahead of yourself with the Math II. Having taken it and got an 800, it’s not a terribly difficult test, but if you think you’re maxing out on the SAT I Math at 700 then you may want to scale back your expectations. But just a thought, obviously you know yourself better than anyone else. So good luck, and please (!!) chance me back at : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1435283-chance-me-cornell-penn-northwestern-rice.html

Thank you so much! Just chanced you. Also I’m from the South, not sure if that helps or not at either school?

The only issue I see with your application is that your issues don’t show extreme focus nor are amazing.

Could you elaborate?

Your resume is pretty strong. However, in universities like Yale and Stanford one can never predict anything. I know people getting 2350 getting rejected and 2100s accepted (Both with 4.0 GPA). So its pretty dicey, they are reaches for pretty much everyone. Anyways, you do have a good shot. Good luck.

Bump, post a link and I’ll chance back

You look good to me!! It is so hard to predict with schools like that… But your stats are very, very impressive! chance me back?
Best of luck to you!

Chanced you back! Good luck with Fordham!

What is your GPA?

I’m no expert, but your resume looks very solid; of course, with the Ivy Leagues, even 4.0/2400’s need to have backups.

You have a fighting shot at Yale and Stanford but I would apply to more reach schools like Columbia, Duke, and Penn to increase your shot of landing even one acceptance.

“math has always been a weakness”
“and am a year ahead of the majority of my class in math.”
lolwut.
anyway, great chance of being accepted. yayy
