Hey.

Generally, what are my chances of getting in if the only thing I can contribute is ~5-6 thousand dollars from my family’s income? Single parent/three children family, poor country (serbia), mother lawyer, father unemployed. I’d give more if I had more, ofc. :D

I mean, would it be like:

1) SRY NO. No fin aid available, hence no admission for you, boy.

or

2) We’d like to admit you, BUT not with fin aid.

If it was the latter, meaning they’d still give me a place but only if I miraculously got the money (like taking a loan from suspicious sources, nvm), I’d still have a shot.

Basically, my family’s income is ~25000 dollars per year, BUT that is like upper-class-high for my country.

What do you think?

I'm pretty certain that it will be (1).

So I shouldn't even send the fin aid request? That way I'll have bigger chances, right? I mean, the worse that could happen is that they accept me and I have no means to pay and have to decline their offer...

For international students, Brown is need aware, but covers 100% of financial need. You need to file for financial aid when you apply.

There probably are some international students who don't get accepted because they need financial aid. How many, I don't know. But there are international students who get accepted who need aid -- and then they get 100% of what they need (as defined by the Brown financial aid office).

What is the point of applying if there is no way you can go without aid? For bragging rights? If you don't check off that box, you'll never know if you might have been accepted with a generous aid package that would have allowed you to attend.

Plus, Brown admissions isn't stupid. They can tell from other parts of your application what your financial situation is like.

But sure, if you want to be able to brag 30 years from now that you got into Brown but were too stupid to ask for aid and so weren't able to go -- go ahead with your plan.

No no no, I mean, I could probably get the money but that would get me into serious debts.

so basically, I have (1) rejected because of finaid or (2) accepted with no fin aid but in debts. Ugh.

I think I need at least some precise info about how many of intl students receive the aid or what their applications must be like etc.

NOT for bragging rights, believe me.

Listen to fireandrain. Period.

No. You are either rejected because there is no money to give you or you would be accepted AND GIVEN THE MONEY YOU NEED, including grants.

Every international student accepted who needs aid gets it. I have never seen statistics on what percentage of international students receive aid, or what percentage is accepted. As for their applications-- they are probably extremely strong candidates, as is everyone else accepted to Brown.
