Chances due to Native American URM status?

I am a native American from oklahoma, which i feel is an underrepresented area? I was wondering what my chances are for Upenn, Columbia, UCSD, UCB, and possibly dartmouth-which i know has some indian affiliation?
I am currently a junior, native american, as i said, and have a 4.0 UW Gpa and a 4.8 weighted. I have had straight A's sophomore year, and so junior year, and plan to continue them my senior year. My only problem is I got a 3.2 UW and a 4.0 W GPA my freshman Year. How bad will this hurt my chances? I took one AP test Freshman year, got a 4, took one soph year, got a 5, am taking 4 this year, and planning on 4's and 5's, and am taking 4 next year and planning on getting 4's and 5's. I got to an okay high school, but the teachers arent that great, so I have spent tons of time learning things myself which has proven to be very difficult, but I have been pretty successful. I got a 2100 on the SAT and a 32 on the ACT. I am very, very involved in the school with STUCO leadership, pep club stuff, etc.. I also play tennis, which is the main activity I pursure, and am nationally ranked in the sport. I have gone to state all 3 years of high school, and done very well each year as well. I hope tennis and school leadership stand out as my biggest passions, and was just wondering my chances! thank you!

I think you have a really good shot (a lot of it due to major URM status). I think you have a decent at any school you apply to (especially since your stats minus URM are not that bad at all). Very good, very good.

Sounds like a better shot at a top school than most on here. Go for it.

honestly man, if you're native american, you pretty much don't even need to try in high school. i know an indian from my class who got into columbia with a 3.4 and the only extracurricular she did was this world of warcraft enthusiast club. plus, you've got excellent grades as it is.

what tribe are you from? my dad is half blackfoot, but unfortuneately we're not enrolled because my grandpa was adopted by a white family and there are no census records linking him back to the tribe.

You should not worry, your grades are still excellent, your SAT and ACT score is fine, and the national ranking certainly helps. You definitely have a very good chance because of the Native American thing, but certainly don't slack off!

If you are really worried about freshman grades, you can apply to schools that specifically don't look at them. I know Stanford doesn't look at 9th grade scores, not sure what other schools don't.

Upenn: 35%
Columbia: 45%
UCSD: 35% (they dont look at race)
UCB: 20% (they dont look at race)
Dartmouth: 45%

good luck.. being native american helps so much, you're really lucky.

^^ uh, how much about admissions do you know?

Berkeley and UCSD do look at ethnicity, but don't weight it as much as top privates. This is obvious 1) in the Asian population and 2) in the stats of some of the URMs.

Native American helps someone, but not "so much."

Berkeley would be a rough match, UCSD a safe match. The others are more difficult to gauge, but okay-good chances at them.

i am pretty sure the uc's do not consider race.

on the application there was no place to put it. only after you apply, do they ask for your race, and they specifically say its only for statistics purposes and will not be used by the admissions office.

I am part Arapaho Indian

Any more takers?

natew6338: What do you have to have in order to proove your indian heritage? My greatgrandmother on my mothers side was full blooded Cherokee which would make my daughter 1/16 I believe. Would that be enough to even mention and I have some records of this but no proof of enrollment with any tribe.

i dont think it counts once u get past 1/8 or something lol...the majority of your daughter's heritage is elsewhere so that major nationality will be the one you affiliate with your daughter.

based on ur grades i think you have a good shot at most of those without the URM, but it just helps that much more. what kind of ec's to u do and what are ur SAT scores.

and even if a college says they dont look at race and a factor, they really do. Some just put more emphasis on it than others. EVERY school tries to have some diversity.

Native american with AMAZING GPA PLUS a high score is a lock anywhere, unless you killed someone.

how can you say UC's factor in race when they all have an asian population of like 50%+

I'd say a pretty good chance. Heck, I wouldn't be suprised if you got accepeted into one of the HYPSMs.

"how can you say UC's factor in race when they all have an asian population of like 50%+"

Because, if they don't, then the Asian population would be much higher!

UC's do factor in race and they just started doing this.
UCB was doing the holistic approach the last 2 or 3 years.
UCLA started doing the holistic method this year for class of 2007 graduates.
As to UCSD I'm not 100% sure when they started their holistic method, but they do it.
The holistic approach factors the whole applicant in, instead of looking just at their grades and their SAT's/ACT's. You'll be in any UC FOR SURE because of your 4.0 and then the native american is the icing on the cake.
Good look.

When people do chances, they are so harsh. Let's be realistic here. mj93, how could you say he has a 35% chance of getting into UCSD. He is miles above the average applicant. His stats are excellent. The acceptance rate for UCSD is 42%. So, you're saying his resume is worse than the acceptance rate. You're an idiot.

Penn - 50%
Columbia - 40%
UCSD - 95%
Berkeley - 70%
Dartmouth - 70%
