CHANCES? esp. Gtown

White, Upstate New Yorker from a very Italian family. I go to joe average public high school. I (tentatively) plan to major in PoliSci perhaps with a minor in history or geography.

GPA... ummm I don't know what it is on a 4.0 scale. I can tell you though that my grades have all been A's except for one quarter-year in Math 3H when I got a B. Even with that, my overall grade in that class, for that year was an A. My average out of 100 tends to hover around 96.

Rank: 20/601

SAT 2110/2400 (CR=770, M=670, W=670) Only try, considering retaking.

SAT II World History = 780
" " US History = 770
" " Biology E = 760

3 AP Courses (World History, Biology, and English Lang) and one college level course (SUNY Cortland, American History) and lots of Honors classes, next year I'll take 3 more AP (Stats, Euro History, and Government) and one more college level (Syracuse University Project Advance English and Writing)

Scored a 5 on the AP World, still waiting for scores from the others.

ECA's

-School Musical (every year since 6th grade)
-Summer Musicals (3 years)
-Concert Chorale (3 years) - President-Elect (elected by my peers for next year)
-All-County Chorus (3 years Jr. High, 2 years Sr. High)
L.H.S. FAME, it's a music group at my school that does Broadway style stuff, kind of like a show choir with more costuming and more intense choreography. (3 years)
-Student Publicist for Fall Play (1 year)
-Understudy for Fall Play (1 year)
-Heavily involved in local, grassroots efforts for the Ron Paul presidential campaign.

-Ntl Jr. Honor Society (1 year)
-Ntl Honor Society (inducted this year, for next year)
-Volunteering at the concession stand for Little League. I've just started the whole college search process so I've never thought to count hours. :/

Will be attending JSA Summer Program @ Georgetown this summer

Awards:
Global History Achievement Award
Student of the Month - November 2006
2nd place in 9th grade Earth Science Symposium, and I got some special army award thingy
American Legion Citizenship Award
American Classical League "Maxima Cum Laude" Award for doing well on the Nat'l Latin Exam

Now I realize that I've listed some unknowns up there, but given the info I do have, what are my odds (Reach-Match-Safety) at:

U Penn
Georgetown
GWU
American
Gettysburg College
SUNY Binghamton

Anywhere else you think I should look at...

Thanks!

Hmm, judging by those stats I'd say:

U Penn - reach
Georgetown - high match/low reach
GWU - match
American - match
Gettysburg College - not sure, probably a safe match? I'm not familiar
SUNY Binghamton - safe match

If you can bump your SAT I score up a bit, I think you could clinch Georgetown as a match and probably up your chances everywhere.

EDIT: You might want to look into some of the lower ivies, like Cornell/Dartmouth, as well as maybe Northwestern. You could do with some more reaches.

I know I probably should retake the SAT. The October test date though just happens to be on my birthday, so I'm somewhat reluctant. I'll probably suck it up and take it anyway, but still it's unfortunate.

Northwestern maybe, or U Chicago as another reach. I'd rather not go to a rural schoool like Dartmouth or Cornell. A suburban school would be ideal. I'd also like a school that is not fiercely liberal. I'd like a school with a vocal conservative voice that is tolerated, even though it probably wont be the majority viewpoint.

Anyway, thanks highpopes.

U Penn REACH
Georgetown REACH/IN
GWU IN
American IN
Gettysburg College IN
SUNY Binghamton IN

Thanks cookiesrus.

I feel like I'm a very similar applicant. Tentative Poli Sci Major, looking at Georgetown, from NY, did well on National Latin Exam, Musicals and choral stuff. Very cool the know there are people with similar interests as me =P
If your school offers or if you can find a nearby college that offers it, try and take AP Human Geography. It's a great course (coming from someone with similar interests)

Are you applying to Georgetown for the School of Foreign Service? Or the normal liberal arts college? Also, look into U. Chicago. They have a great poli sci program. You can also apply to both U. Chicago and Georgetown Early Action. That's what I would do in your scenario. Non-binding, might as well get the application out of the way early

U Penn - reach (but not that much of a reach if you maybe brought your SATs up)
Georgetown - high match
GWU - in
American - in
Gettysburg College - in

And I think you would have a great chance of getting into U Chicago too
SUNY Binghamton - in

I would try to improve your SAT 1s - the writing isn't hard to bring up at all - i brought mine up 90 points - then i think that you'd be able to get into Gtown and improve your chances at Penn

Gtown doesn't look at Writing, but I probably could do better at math. :/ The test date had to be October 4th of all days, but clinching Gtown will definitely be worth it.

It's definitely neat to see other people out there like me. I don't suppose you can friend people on CC like on Facebook or something? I'd like to see if we get into any of the same schools. For Gtown, I plan to apply to the normal liberal arts college, just because it has history and is more theory.

I'd take AP Geography, but my school doesn't offer it. There is a possibility that AP Latin will be offered next year, but we might not have enough students. I might take that as well. I think U Chicago is a good idea. Chicago has that notable intellectual, nerdy reputation which is rather appealing. If they do EA too, might as well apply to both.

Thanks for the chances sherlock, and nvnc.

U Penn- reach (SAT's up will boost u, plus u've only taken them once)
Georgetown- low reach/possible match
GWU-match
American-match
Gettysburg College-match (safety)
SUNY Binghamton-match

good luck
