Chances for 2011 freshman :)

The University of Alabama has everything I consiter vital to my college experience! I’ve researched tons and tons of schools but Bama is definitely one of my top choices. I’ve heard too many different things about “who gets accepted” and the difficulty of admission though. My GPA isn’t so strong but I’ve always taken difficult classes and have decent test scores.

GPA: 3.0-3.2 (depending on how I finish this year)
SAT: 1920 composite, 1280 without writing
ACT: 31

Honors: english 9 & 10, biology, chemistry, geosystems, world history I
AP’s: world history, US history, psychology, env. science, euro. history, government, literature

EC’s: 4 years varsity basketball, 3 years varsity tennis, 2 varsity volleyball, 2 varsity football manager, 4 years yearbook staff (2 years editor), started breast cancer awareness club and served as president, various volunteer work through the county/state park authority

I think my resume is strong with the exception of my GPA
pleaseeeeee give me any feedback you can  thank you in advance

GPA’s a bit weak for Alabama, but your schedule is fairly difficult and your ACT score is great (I don’t remember the direct comparison, but I might just send the ACT)

When are you planning on entering the University?

I think that you’ll get in, but as for scholarships go, it will be tough do to your GPA. Having 4’s or 5’s on your AP exams would be a great help, 3’s would too, but to a lesser extent. As with other schools, an upward trend in GPA would be good. You didn’t say if your GPA is weighted or not. If it is unweighted, see if you can get your school to weight your GPA (UA admissions can help them with this). I’m pretty sure UA will continue using the highest GPA on your transcript and a 3.5+ would qualify you for scholarships unless requirements change.

If you haven’t already, retake the ACT and/or SAT as a higher score would always help.

I’m also a bit confused as to if you are a senior graduating hs this year or are a rising hs senior.

You will get in and you can get into the Honors College with your ACT 31. Apply early…the app should go up in about 4 weeks or so. Your ACT is better than your SAT…which is fine, so make sure that gets sent to Bama.

Is that your weighted GPA? If your weighted GPA is higher, you may get a scholarship.

You’ll get in even if that is your weighted GPA. Bama is flexible with GPA with a high ACT score - which you have.

What will your major be? If you don’t get a university scholarship, you would be a contender for a dept scholarship.

I’m finishing junior year now. Sorry if that was unclear. And that is my weighted GPA.
Would it help my chances if I applied early? I was planning on doing so anyways but I want to do whatever benefits me the most.

I also go to a nationally ranked high school in Northern Virginia that yields many Alabama and Auburn acceptee’s with GPA’s in the 2.5 range as well as SAT’s around 1050 (1600) scale. I’ve heard that the admissions staff at these schools tend to lean towards NoVa’s out of state money as well as give our students the benefit of the doubt based on the difficulty of our school system.

I also forgot to mention I was diagnosed with severe ADD in late march (that was far from my knowledge) and have been put on medicine that has shown amazing results. Could this help as well?

Thank you all for your responses!

You will get accepted. Don’t worry. Your stats are fine. I can practically promise.

Apply in July or August (send school transcripts and test scores) so that you’ll quickly get an acceptance. If you apply early, you’ll get your acceptance within a few weeks.

:) thank you for your imput!

I know Bama has rolling admission, but do you know the deadline for when I would have to notify the university by?

Just like most of the schools in the country, Alabama’s deadline is May 1.

^^^

But, if you want the best choice in housing, you need to give deposits before then.

I plan on applying as soon as possible!

Do you know if my GPA would restrict me from joining any sorority? I know different organizations and chapters have different requirements but does anyone know the basics?
And, is how is the financial aid at UA? I know I’m not qualified for a scholarship  but being out of state I was wondering if there was any way I could get SOME funding lol

You may still get a scholarship.

If your weighted GPA stays under a 3.5, then you won’t get a guaranteed scholarship.

However, the scholarship dept says that they still will consider those with high test scores and a 3.0+ GPA for other scholarships. So, your ACT is desirable, so you have a good chance for a scholarship (but you may not be told about it until late winter/early spring).

I’ll give you another hint by PM…

Is that your weighted GPA that includes ALL classes (even PE)??

Will you be taking the SAT and ACT again? If you bump it even higher, your chances will be even better.

Did I overlook where you’ve put your likely major? (I may have missed that.)

Most sororities state a minimum of 3.0 high school GPA to pledge. Some have a slightly lower requirement for college GPA. Take a look at this year’s recruitment manual: http://issuu.com/uapanhellenicassociation/docs/final_recruitment_manual

As Mom2CK said, you’re a LOCK to get accepted. I have no idea about the honors college or scholarships, but just apply and see what happens with those.
