What are my chances of admission?

Alright so I sent in an early application a few weeks ago and I was wondering if somebody could give me an idea as to what my chances are.

My cumulative HS GPA is 2.9 from a private school in northern Virginia. My SAT was an 1140, but I might take it again this fall if I get wait listed.

I would list my EC but the application didn’t ask for them so I was hoping I could get some feedback based purely off the numbers.

Thanks everyone.

common wisdom is “everyone gets in to bama.”

i don’t know if it is true, but their standards are not very tough.

if i had to guess, i would say you are probably ok.

This notion that everyone gets into Bama is nonsense. Last Fall, UA rejected 40 per cent of its 18,500 applicants. While that rejection rate is still far below the Harvards, UCLA’s, etc., it is not too far away from great schools like UGA, and Clemson. Auburn is considered a good school, and it only rejected 29 per cent of its applicants last fall.

The UA site used to set the GPA minimum at 3.0 with a 21 ACT, so Im guessing that some were able to gain admission with a lower GPA if their ACT or SAT were above 21 and/or its SAT equivalent. However, UA no longer posts a minumum score or GPA on its website. Only UA knows what that means for sure, but school officials have already announced that UA will raise its standards higher given this Fall’s fulfillment of the enrollment goal of 28,000.

The SAT is all right (I’m assuming that is for the reading and math only). But I would take special care and work on your GPA to push it above a 3.0.

they admit based on grades up until the end of junior year, so raising it for admission won’t really work.

: /

Really? They say that you should submit your ‘most recent HS transcript’ and that priority admission deadline is before Feb 1st. I’d think that a student who completed a senior year marking period would then include those grades along w/the app.

That being said, my son applied in Aug, so didn’t have senior yr grades…

well, i suppose they might look at first semester senior year grades if you are applying late, but i asked a few different schools about this and was told they looked at grades up through the end of junior year.

even if you try to bring your grades up senior year, it is really an uphill battle being so late in the game.

my dd finished ninth grade with a 6.08 and is trying to end up with a 6.25. she brings it up a little each time, but it will still be hard work to end up with a 6.25.

Yeah I will most definately be working my tail off to get the grades up this first semester in case I have to send in another set of grades.

That being said looking at the requirements for HS classes it seems like I have a lot more than what they are wanting. I’ve taken 5 credits worth of foreign languages (4 Latin, 1 Spanish) instead of 1, and I wanna say 3 lab sciences (Physics, Chemistry, and I think Biology is one?) as opposed to two.

Do you think that that can help me even with the sub-stellar GPA?

Re: senior year grades. My son got deferred at U of Illi & Purdue for Comp Sci (U of Ill, 4th in country in that major). They wanted to see his 1st mking period grades from senior year. Then, he was admitted to both (& invited to honors at U of Ill). This was a shock, I didn’t know schools did that. I think they were looking for continuation of upward trend.

I got in!!! Roll Tide baby!

Congratulations…nice to have one in your pocket. Perhaps you’ll see my D there next fall.

Glad to hear your good news, va92. If UA is your first choice, remember to send in your housing deposit sooner than later. It determines when you select your housing next spring.

Momreads: Really? DD got her letter a few weeks ago and we didn’t know that! It’s not a definite that she’ll go there but it’s currently at #1. Put that on the list of things to do tonight!

RobD, that is true. My son received his acceptance last October. He qualified for the honors housing. He paid his deposit in late January. The honors housing students have priority dates, three in March, if the deposit is paid. If a student is not in honors housing, the earliest that they select their housing is in early to mid April.

Oh, ok, so I don’t have to rush the check out tonight; phew!

congrats, va92!

Congrats, va92!

BTW…this is a lesson for anyone whose stats are “borderline” for UA. Since UA has “rolling admissions,” if you apply in early fall of senior year (or even late summer before senior year begins), you have a better chance for admittance.

Of course, if a person is planning to retake SAT or ACT for higher score, then waiting til later in the fall is still good. But, if I was borderline, I wouldn’t wait too long to apply.

I don’t know this for a fact…but UA may have taken into account that va92 went to a private school which may grade more severely than a public.

I definitely agree! I think sending off the application sooner rather than later is better!

I sent off my application to UA a couple of days ago and I’m really hoping to get in!

I’m waiting to hear what my ACT scores are, but I’m assuming and hoping they will be over 21.

My GPA is 3.74

But I’m apart of the Fairfax County Public Schools, in Virginia, so the grading scale up until this year has been pretty tough and not a normal grading scale!

Hopefully I’m in at UA :)

Since you’ve applied early, and you have a strong GPA, I really think you will get accepted.

The following is from the UA website… note that it doesn’t specify an “exact” required ACT or SAT score - which to me suggests some flexibility if one’s GPA is very good.

Minimum requirements for admission. In terms of educational preparation, 1) the college preparatory curriculum minimum unit requirements for regular admissions are

English 4 units
Mathematics 3 units, beginning with algebra I, algebra II,
and one unit of either geometry, trigonometry, or calculus
Social studies 4 units, including world history or a comparable course
Natural science 3 units, including 2 units with a laboratory
Foreign language 1 unit

Other academic courses 5 units—students are encouraged to
complete the following:

at least two years of a foreign language
one year of computer literacy
one year of fine arts
at least four years of mathematics and sciences

The Advanced Academic Diploma awarded by Alabama high schools meets all University of Alabama course requirements.

2) **These course requirements are in addition to the requirements of a “B” average and an acceptable score on the ACT or SAT. **

As an aside to others…I have known one or two students (with stats lower than cganyard’s) that were accepted “conditionally” which just meant that they had to demonstrate decent grades their first semester at UA in order to continue (I don’t know what the “good grade benchmark” was - probably something like a 2.5 GPA)
