Chances for 26 year old unconventional

ok here is the long and short of my story, I am 26 years old and graduated high school in 2004. I have been working full time since I was 18 years old and have been working for the same rather large company for the past 6 years full time. I decided about a year and a half ago to go back to school and enrolled in my local CCC. basically I have decided to try and attempt medical school but that is another story. I am planning on majoring with a BA of anthropology at UCLA as a transfer. I have completed all my IGETC with a current 3.9, I only need 1 college level math and 2 more anthro classes.I volunteer at the local emergency room 8 hours a week as well as work 32 hours a week currently while taking 16 units. besides the volunteering i dont have many EC's due to working so much. Since i can not relocate UCLA is my one and only hope at a UC otherwise Ill be stuck at CSUN:(. anyone have any chances or suggestions for me. I have a unique story as my mother has a disease and has been handicapped since I was young, I have had to work to help the family and this is why I never was encourage to pursue college, I would also be a first gen college student. Thank you guys for any information, I have been lurking and gaining so much valuable information that my school councilor never could provide. Thank You in advance.... and i will also have all my math and anthro pre reqs done by the time I apply next year

Sounds like you’re in easily at UCLA. Are you applying for the Anthro (B.A.) or Anthro (B.S.)? If I had to guess it’s probably the BA because you said you need to complete a college level math course and Anthro (B.S.) recommends taking a full year of calculus. Regardless, the average admitted GPA for Anthro (B.A.) was 3.59 and for the B.S. was a 3.69 this year. From the sounds of it, you seem more than qualified as long as you finish your pre-reqs. That also assumes you haven’t taken any college classes at anywhere else in the last 8 years so that 3.9 is your overall gpa. You have a strong background story and a strong GPA, so you should be an easy decision for them.

thank you, and yes when I started college a year and a half ago that was my first class since I had graduated high school in 2004. and yes the BA is what im going for… Thank you for the response this website has helped me so much.

If I could give you some advice in hindsight. I think you should’ve finished those two anthro pre-reqs earlier as well as the math requirement and then left the rest of the IGETC classes to finish in your last couple terms. Pre-reqs and the one UC transferable math course are much more important than your IGETC because they’re required for your major and the math course is required for admission eligibility. IGETC is nice to have completed because it means you won’t have to take any GE classes at UCLA, but you can still be admitted without completing it so it isn’t nearly as significant.

Just make sure to complete all math and English requirements by Fall 2013. If you keep that GPA up, you should get in anywhere.

I’m an anthro major w/ a 3.5 :(

I completely agree with you. unfortunately it took me a year of bad scheduling before I found accurate and helpful inforatmion…maybe commons sense? but it was also very difficult to get those classes early in my freshman year due to a heavy work schedule and having extremely limit class availability in CCC’s I plan and adressing that in my personal statement I just hope that it doesnt look to bad on my part.

If you need to stay in the LA area, there’s LMU and USC both of which are taking applications until February. However, I’d say you’re in at UCLA with that GPA and work experience.

@andrew Very true although USC’s cost is an issue
