Florida State

U of Central Florida
Penn State
Drexel Univ.
Georgia Tech

Gender: Male
Location: Florida
Class of: 2009
UW GPA (Academic courses only): 3.4
W GPA (Academic courses only): 3.7
SAT: 1190/1600, 1740/2400 (taken one time and goal is mid 1200s)
Coureseload: ALL honors including 6 APs- one of the toughest my school offers

Trend: Opposite of most. Nearly straight A's freshman year, mostly A's sophomore year, mostly B's mixed with a couple C's junior year. I attribute it to the harder courseload but I'm not sure admissions people will be so kind-hearted.

EC's/awards:

Varsity Football
Varsity Track
Frsh, JV and Varsity Bsktball
Beta Club
Environmental Action Committee (coordinate recycling around campus, among other things)
Student Government
Nominee for a number of summer programs but didn't attend any due to financial reasons

I think that's about it, but if you guys need anything else to go off of, just let me know.

Thanks for the advice guys. It seems the general advice that I've been getting is to improve my SAT and I figured that would be the case. I was somewhat disappointed by my 1190 the first time around so I've been studying a little bit more as the test nears (June 7th) and my goal is for at least a 1250

*" The middle 50% of the Fall 2008 accepted freshman class is: 3.7-4.2 GPA; 1190-1330 SAT (Critical Reading plus Math); 26-29 ACT.

The top quartile of our Fall 2008 accepted freshman class rivals any selective school in the nation with an average GPA of 4.43, and average SAT of 1398 (Critical Reading plus Math), and an average ACT composite of 31."*

Don't underestimate the difficulty or the competition - especially OOS.

^ His weighted GPA is 3.7, and seeing that he is in FSU range, a Florida resident, and not bad EC's, it is not hard to get in. I have seen any others with less impressive stats get in, including many 2.9 averages and 3.2's. I belive he will get in.

^^^Sorry, I'm calling BS on this post. I've haven’t' heard of anyone with a 2.9 getting into FSU, unless you're a highly recruited star athlete. Plenty of people with 1200+ SAT scores were rejected last year. Btw, the stats don't lie, clueless posters on a message board do.

I have seen a few seniors at my school this year with GPA's hovering around the 3.0 range unweighted although they were in very difficult courseloads. None of their SAT scores were astounding either, and I think the best was 1240. This happened AFTER the admissions cutbacks too.

only problem with penn state...
you need at least a 3.5 unweighted to get into main campus.
it's going to be harder for you since you are out of state.

No offense parent2noles, but I have heard you making posts before stating that admission to FSU was close to ivy league level. FSU is definitely a good school, but let's not let personal bias spill out to where you start passing out the FSU Kool-Aid that you have obviously been drinking. I would hate for you to give out incorrect advice that would discourage someone from applying to FSU. Taking nothing away from FSU, UF is definitely a much harder school to get into and is the top public in Florida. FSU- ranked 111. UF- ranked 49.

Best of luck. I think you have a shot at all of these schools.

Completely untrue. I have never said FSU has Ivy League admission standards, where one might find the average freshman SAT at 1470/1600 or higher.

FITC standards are, however, dramatically increasing at FSU for the reasons I have stated above. Whatever data you think you know about FSU is out of date.

Ignore this advice at your own risk. ;)

FSU does indeed have some programs that can compete with Ivy League schools, but most of these are at the graduate level - see: FSU Highlights

Well, I think that unfortunately people have been feeding you inaccurate information. I believe that you might be taking this as an attack on the university, which it is definitely not. I am sure that FSU offers a fine education. As of 2005, though, the FSU SAT range 25th percentile-75% percentile was 1070-1250. Florida State University, Florida. The acceptance rate, as of 2006, was just around 65%, while the UF is at 53%. College acceptance rates: How many get in? - USATODAY.com. I don't believe that there can be a direct correlation made between the quality of students and the acceptance rate, but I am just trying to get across my point that it may not be as difficult to gain admission as you have been led to believe.

I don't think that 2005 is too out of date, nor do I think too much of a change has taken place during the last 2, not including the current one, times of admission.

I was only talking about the undergraduate programs, so I really don't know the rankings of the graduate programs. Also, it may not be the strongest statement to list the school's website as the reference source. It is hard to consider a school's website to be an unbiased or reliable source.

This is an estimate on my part as no data has been released by FSU yet, except the accepted freshman data, which I also posted above.

If anyone wants to underestimate this multi-year movement in the SAT averages, be my guest, but the chances are quite real you would not be admitted if you apply with a lower SAT.

Once again, I will consider your data reliable when it doesn't end in fsu.edu. Honestly, all schools twist these averages to make themselves look better. I would like you to find a source, not affiliated with the university, that backs up these SAT averages. I doubt you could find one.
