I was recently chanced in regards to a few in state schools (FSU, UF, UCF). However, I've been taking the advice of my dad recently and have been checking out some possible Out of State schools (mostly Southeastern) that I wouldn't mind attending and that, I feel, aren't out of my reach. If you want, a simple system of "match", "reach", "safety", etc. would be fine. Anyways, here it goes....

Gender: Male
Location: Florida
Class of: 2009
UW GPA (Academic courses only): 3.325
W GPA (Academic courses only): 3.73
SAT: 1190/1600, 1740/2400 (taken one time and goal is mid 1200s)
Coureseload: ALL honors including 6 APs- one of the toughest my school offers

Trend: Opposite of most. Nearly straight A's freshman year, mostly A's sophomore year, mostly B's mixed with a couple C's junior year. I attribute it to the harder courseload but I'm not sure admissions people will be so kind-hearted.

EC's/awards:

Varsity Football
Varsity Track
Frsh, JV and Varsity Bsktball
Beta Club
Environmental Action Committee (coordinate recycling around campus, among other things)
Student Government
Nominee for a number of summer programs but didn't attend any due to financial reasons

The Schools:

Clemson
LSU
Tennessee
Drexel
North Carolina State

Thanks!

Can I ask you something? Why would you go to schools that are worse than better and cheaper state schools?

In case I can't get into UF or FSU maybe? I personally don't see myself getting into UF and FSU isn't exactly a lock. After those two schools in Florida, there's nothing to write home about and I want the big time college atmosphere. Florida Atlantic or a school of that caliber can't exactly give me what I'm looking for in that regard, now can it? By the way, LSU would only cost about $2-3,000 more a year because it's out of state tuition is about $12,000 and it's room and board is $5,000. The florida schools are all $3-4,000 for tuition and would be roughly $10,000 a year for room. Really, no big difference there.

I didn't ask if you liked where I was applying though, did I?

FSU is definitely not a lock, but you do have a decent chance at getting in. Remember to apply for the summer term at FSU and at UF.

I also think you have a very good chance of getting in at most of those out-of-state schools. Clemson, UT, and NC State are probably the best schools out of that group.

get your SAT's up and your set

LSU and NC State, maybe, but then again your SAT is a little scary for an app. If you can just raise it 100-200 pts. you would have a way better shot.

Thanks guys.

Is an 1190 really "scary" though? The majority of kids in my area seem to think that anything near 1200 or above is very good. I retake them on Saturday though, so wish me luck!

I guess I just need to consider who is giving the advice....
