Chances for a published novelist?

Hi my friend is applying to yale and is about to get locally published (in pakistan), and might also get published in the states.

His grades this year were not the best..basically a 3.2 GPA..
although in his previous years they were about 3.8-3.9
note that we dont really have a GPA/ranking system here this is just a rough estimate..
he's also council member of debates and VP of World Affais Society. He's also a prefect (an unelected student council position)
It is important to know that he is taking courses that are going to make up his 3.2 GPA...but they'll know its a re-take.

I on the other hand have been maintaining a 4.0 GPA all over....
and we're both applying to yale..
i have directed a play, and am in the council member of the photography society and the council member of writer's forum.

Independently do eitheir of us stand a chance? and which one of us stand a better chance?

I think you both have a good chance since yale have so many people with high grades your friends EC's look good. In my opinion, you have a better chance what were your SAT scores?

his is 2080
and mine is 2190.

Neither of your ECs are going to be eye openers unless his book was published in a mainstream press and is critically acclaimed. Anyone can get a book published. A big deciding factor is the quality of your school and what Yale knows about it. Have kids with stats gotten into Yale in the past? Though this is also a factor for US students and schools, for international students, particularly countries that have many applicants to US school, it can be a crucial one. Though I would not discount your applications, on the surface, neither of you are strong candidates for Yale compared to what I have seen. And many of those kids did not get in.
