chances for a transfer student?

I'm currently a Freshman at Stony Brook University (a SUNY school). I slacked off in high school and so my GPA suffered. I would appreciate any input about my chances at Smith. I know I will have at least very good rec and my personal statement should be very strong. Thanks for your help!

College GPA:3.7-4.0
ECs: I haven't been very active in extra curriculars at my current school. I started going to amnesty internaltional. I'm still involved in music things and I will join ambulance corps next semester (It is very hard to get in but I took an EMT course over the summer).

High School GPA: 3.2 UW 3.8 W
SAT I: 750m 740v SATII: 760 math2c, 700 writing, 640 chem (took sophomore year)
6 APs-ap scholar w/distinction
ECS: a lot of music (piano) things-competitions, performances, groups, music camps etc.
emergency services explorer post/volunteering at first aid stations
2 years of mock trial

I don't think they'll look at your SAT's much once you're in any college. Your GPA looks good to me.

There aren't a lot of transfers into Smith and therefore there's not nearly as much expertise on such lying around the board. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply!

Transfer Students for Smith
Total number of transfer students who applied: 223
Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 81

Huh. Thanks for posting that RLT. That was more than I had thought...I had in mind about half that...were those numbers for Fall 2004?

I believe so. The admit rate was 57%. That was for the class of 08 This year, (09) the admit rate was 47%, I believe. USNews is a year in the rear. The ranking should go back next year with the substancially lower numbers. Not that it matters.

Thanks for the stats

You’re welcome. If you’re transferring in after one yr. admissions will glance at your SATs. In your case that’s a benefit. They can say all they want but SATs still matter. Smith cares about the rankings as much as any college. That’s one reason Holyoke, Holy Cross, Middlebury, et al dropped the SAT requirement. Now they only have to report the students who did submit-- high scorers. Bowdoin and Bates play that game
But as a transfer your SAT stats aren’t factored in. Too bad.

Good luck. :)

i am in the same situation as coffee. i received a smith book award in high school and decided to apply. how i got the award with my gpa as it was is beyond me, but i did not get admitted.
once out of high school, i took a year off to save up some funds and formulate a plan. i ended up enrolling in a public school near by.
i plan on transfering, and i am glad to see the acceptance percentage for transfers to be higher than i imagined.

Recreating eve. Nice name!!!

You know better then to be tempted by the serpent this time, right? Just remember, screw the apple ;)

I was in a similiar possition-slacked off in high school, did well in college and wanted to transfer to smith. Contrary to what other people are saying, smith actually doesnt ask for SATs. If you have been in college a year or more, you dont need to submit them. I didnt submit mine, and I was accepted. Smith looks at the whole student, not just high school grades. be sure to write a very good essay on why you should go to smith and how you have changed for the better!

Coffejunkie finished only one semester of college. If she is applying as a transfer by the Feb 1 deadline for Sept admission, as I assumed, they will ask to see her high school SATs as she hasn’t finished a year of college. You’re correct though, submitting the SATs is optional if she wants to wait to apply as a transfer to the spring class of 2007 after she finishes this semester and has completed one full year of college.

With her SATs, it would be benefical to submit them.

A lot of people hate the SAT but applying to colleges makes me quite glad it exists. Maybe I'm just weird...

I think you'll get in transfer no problem.

Oh, I see. Yes, in that case you would have to submit your SAT scores.

{Oh, I see.}

It can get confusing. :)
