I am a junior who lives in North Florida. I play Varsity basketball, Senior class Vice President and am part of two other National Honors Societies. I do lot’s of community service and participate in service clubs at my school such as Link Crew. I have South Indian heritage (some people say this helps) and play Piano as well. I should get an ACT around 27-29 based off my practice tests. People say I am decent applicant for USCGA however, my weighted gpa is a 3.8 on a 5.0 scale. Now I take the most challenging courses at my school and might be able to pull this up to a 3.9 before late decision opens. I am in the best school district in my state so my class is ver competitive and I am sitting in the upper 30% approx. With all of this, can anyone give me a solid estimate of where I stand regarding receiving an appointment? Please be honest and I appreciate anyone who responds, Thanks!
Update: I also have a job as a bank teller in which I work full-time during the summer and part time during the school year.
Are you male or female? I recently read somewhere/heard somewhere that Coast Guard Academy is overwhelmingly female. Who knew? Apparently it’s easier to get into if you are male. Also, do you swim? Don’t they look for that?
I am a male. Also, I do not swim very often, I believe that they do not test swimming on the PFE. I will be attending the AIM program this summer which some people say has no bearing, and some people say it helps.
I go to a Dodea school overseas in Italy and many of the kids in my school go to the summer seminar program that these schools offer.Which really help out alot and most of the time make it into the Academy’s if they go to the summer program. I don’t know how it is for people without a military connection, but if you know someone who is high rank within the military you will have a better chance of getting a appointment.
USCGA doesn’t require an appointment, which is much easier than for the other service academies.
Thanks everyone, I understand USCGA does not require a congressional nomination, my bad on the poor phrasing, I was asking about my chances of getting accepted.
@Momzie, USCGA is not overwhelmingly female. There are more women than other service academies, and it appears being a woman might help with admission, but it’s still the military so there are a lot of guys.
For 2015 I found these numbers:
Overall Admission Rate 16% of 1,992 applicants were admitted
Women 28% of 417 applicants were admitted
Men 14% of 1,575 applicants were admitted
All Undergraduates 902
Women 305 (33.8%)
Men 597 (66.2%)
Thanks. That’s good to know. I’m trying to convince my daughter to apply for the summer program next year.
