Chances for acceptance into UC Honors Program?

Applying to Mechanical Engineering for fall of 2015...

31 ACT
4.37 weighted GPA
5 out of ~850 class rank
Mostly rigorous schedule
Significant leadership positions

Any chance that is not enough to be accepted into the UC Honors Program?

Thanks

I believe the average ACT was 32+, so you’re slightly below that. Good luck, however.

Thanks Balthezar.

Looking at the UC University Honors Program Profile document, for 2013 the average ACT composite score was 31.7 with the 75% quartile at 33 and the 25% quartile at 30, so clearly, there are applicants with 31s that get accepted into Honors.

Does anyone know what other criteria they consider? Looking at my credentials above, what else should I be doing now and through the fall semester of my coming Sr. year to improve my chances (other than retake the ACT 2 more times)?

For Fall of 2014 the Average ACT was 32.1 and the unweighted GPA average was 3.85.

I’d say that you’ve got a good chance to be offered University Honors, but you asked if there was any chance that you wouldn’t be accepted. The answer is yes. What is your unweighted GPA? Your class rank is top-notch by the way.

I think my unweighted GPA would be 4.0. All my grades for all classes in school have been A or A+.

It looks like they are also looking closely at the personal statement/essay in your application, to look for evidence that you are putting your learning into action and are a reflective learner. I’m pulling that from this information on their website - “Admission is based on more than test scores and high school GPA. While we are looking for students who have excelled academically, we are also looking for students who demonstrate leadership capacities, a willingness to take on challenges and an interest in becoming engaged in local and global communities. We are looking for reflective learners. Students with high test scores and GPAs must also demonstrate the above in their application for admission to the university to be considered for the UHP.”
