My son is a junior in high school (strong public school in MA) and got a 700M and 620CR on his recent first round of SATs. He has a 3.1GPA (3/4 classes are Honors) and will be taking 2 APs next year in addition to 3 Honors. He is on both varsity golf and varsity crew and is president of his school's Latin Club. He's also member of his school's Amnesty International club.

Also, new to this so don't know if it makes any difference, but we do not need any financial aid. Not sure if this matters.

Anyway, if anyone out there could let me know their thoughts regarding his chances of admission, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!

THIS IS REGARDING: VILLANOVA, BUCKNELL, LEHIGH, PENN STATE, GWU, UCONN, BENTLEY, BU

Patty, I'm really unsure as your son's SATs/ECS/courses look good, but gpa is usually higher for most of these schools. Is he looking to play on one of the teams at college? If so, that will help out too. Also, is gpa weighted or unweighted?

what school? im also from MA so im just curious.
the sats are good for all of those schools, im not sure about gpa. if he's taking all aps/honors offered to him, then that will look good

NewEngSocSciMan, maybe you should catch up on the admission standards for some of these schools. Your chances are almost criminal with how misleading they are.

He will have a very hard time getting into Penn State University Park, Lehigh, Villanova, or GWU with a 3.1....

I don't know about the other three, but Penn State University Park's average GPA for incoming freshman is between a 3.6-3.7, and the gpa is 2/3 of the admission decision.

I believe that he will get into BU, Bentley, and UConn, but the rest are far from fits. I hope that he gets into all of them, but you he needs to get the gpa up as much as possible.

i also agree with jec7483...patty im sure ur kids great... but the fact of the matter is... a 3.1 GPA isnt very good for any of those schools.... while ur son is very good in a lot of other areas.... colleges consider a student's GPA as the most significant aspect of their transcript

When 2009 comes, UConn may be a reach. I applied instate with a 3.0 GPA, 1320, for Economics at the College of Liberal Arts and Science back in 2005 and was sent to the regional campus first. I was taking 5 AP classes that senior year, and was a recent transfer from one of the best high schools in NYC (Stuyvesant). My advice would be to do very very well this term.
