Hi, I’m an OOS student (Virginia) who is looking to apply to the College of Natural Sciences for the Math major. I’m wondering if any of you could chance me for acceptance and the honors scholarships for the College of Natural Sciences. Here are my stats:
Rank: 8-7%
SAT: Will get scores in 4 days, expecting in the 1460-1500 range
AP Calc: expecting a 5
AP English: expecting a 4
APUSH: expecting a 4
Will be taking AP Government and AP Stats next year, with a courseload including Advanced Calculus, DE English, and GIS.
Also, how much is offered with the honors scholarships for the college of natural sciences? The scholarship section of the college’s website isn’t exactly specific
Also, do you intend to apply for an honors program- Dean’s or Polymath?
Acceptance to the programs & scholarships are very competitive!
I have minimal knowledge of scholarships awarded from the honors programs (Deans/ Turing) They can range anywhere from a 1 time award $2500 to renewable- $2500 per year. (I think I read from past years of awards near $10,000 - more so in Turing- although I don’t know if those are still common in CNS) I gather that CNS doesn’t have the scholarship $ that Cockrell does.
I learned that the department does provide more opportunities for awards to continuing students- in comparison to ones given to incoming freshman.
With that information in mind- if you need financial assistance- recognize that your OOS tuition is going to be expensive.
@bookmom7 Adding to what you’ve already said, UT gives (and is somewhat notorious for) giving very little merit aid in general. If I recall correctly, only 10% of the student body gets merit aid. I think you can also apply to have in-state tuition as an OOS student. Not that I’m trying to discourage you or anything, it’s just true of most Texas colleges unfortunately.
ECs: 4 years of Academic Team/Scholastic Bowl, 4 years of Science Olympiad, 2 years of Indoor track, 1 year of outdoor track
GPA: 4.116 W, 3.95 UW
I get my AP scores sometime in mid-July.
I believe it’s the Dean’s honors program that I would apply for.
And yeah, the cost of tuition and lack of automatic scholarships is the main reason as to why UT isn’t exactly the highest on my list
@norskie7 With your strong GPA and if your SAT/ACT is highly competitive, it is definitely worth applying, as the CNS programs and the Deans/Polymath are top-notch. Alternatively, UT-Dallas is not at all UT-Austin, but UTD does offer very generous merit scholarships to top OOS students through the AES scholarship program. It is also strong in the STEM fields and close to the opportunities of Dallas. OOS students are also invited to apply for UTD’s McDermott scholarships, which are as good as scholarships get. Just a thought to check out.
