My son applied honors program for the college of Natural Sciences, Mathematics. When we attended the honors info session, no others were Math majors. Anyone know much about this program? Worried at the talk of easy admission in to NS.

…bump …

I think Dean’s Scholars takes 50 or fewer freshman each year. Because of the low number, it is very competitive to get into. I gather the distribution among majors will vary, but I know math majors are represented.

Historically, admission to UT by declaring a major in the College of Natural Sciences has been somewhat easier than, say, Engineering or Business, because those colleges are so selective, they don’t even guarantee admission to top 8% kids. For that reason, savvy applicants may put College of Natural Sciences as their 2nd choice to hedge their bets if they don’t get into a more selective 1st choice. Also, some colleges fill up to capacity faster than Natural Sciences–like Liberal Arts. So people casually talk about it being easier to get into UT via Natural Sciences. I saw a few posts here that went overboard with that sentiment, suggesting almost anyone could walk up and get in. That’s not true–UT isn’t lowering their standards or otherwise admitting unqualified candidates. It’s just that Natural Sciences can be a “backdoor” for some. Does that make sense?

Even if CNS was “easy” to get into and I don’t see it that way…TXArtemis was pretty bang on…the Dean’s Scholar’s program and Plan II program are probably the toughest programs to get into. Generally, Plan II and Dean’s Scholar’s are the most selective and they are admitted holistically so their process just takes longer.

Thanks! Just a nervous mom, hoping for the best for my son whose current goal is to get a PhD in Mathematics and teach/research. I have everything crossed that he gets into Dean Scholars, as I believe that would set him up well. If he works extremely hard and does well in his undergrad in a highly respected program, he should be able to go to the next level at a prestigous university for mathematics research.

Does anyone know how and when acceptance decisions about the honors program will be released? My son is accepted into Physics.

@chemcolo : I thought I heard it would be Feb 15th, as the honors decision is part of the holistic review process? I could be wrong …

The Dean’s Scholars decisions come by mail only. The GC at D’s school called on behalf of a group of students and was told that decisions are delayed this year because of the extension of the Honors App Deadline by a week. Last year they sent the first batch of acceptances around December 8. The impression she got was that they had not sent any as of yet. But from the threads last year the decisions seemed to be rolling.

Oh, and my S has over 575 hours of community service!

@Chemcolo and stillwater : I wish the best for your sons. They sound like serious contenders. Looking forward to the decision.

Best of luck to everyone, else, too! I just can’t wait for all the waiting and hoping to be over. It’s been such a tense time. I am so ready to just know where my S is going to be next year!

BTW, my older son is at UT Austin. He’s a sophomore and loves it! And, we have a condo there where he lives with his friends. If your kids need a place to live in the future, let me know!!

Amazes me how smart these kids are. My D does a crazy amount of community service too. 8 hours every week for the last 3.5 years and more during the summer/breaks! Wouldn’t it be cool if they all make it in?

@collegeshopping: sure would be cool if they all made it. Keeping a positive thought!!

Wondering when decisions will come out? Anyone heard?

I was lucky enough to receive an acceptance on Christmas Eve in the mail :)

@lizabet: were you an automatic admit or a review admit? Did you get accepted as a dean’s scholar?
