Chances for Amherst College and other colleges/universities

Hello! I'm an Asian senior currently living outside of the US applying as an international applicant. I am also applying for Financial Aid.

GPA: 3.512 (4.39 UW) - not really sure if this is accurate

SAT: 2140
740 CR
720 M
680 W

Sat Subject tests: Spanish (w/o Listening) and Literature (should I take another one? I hear that most prestigious universities expect 3 subject tests)

EC's are moderate/pretty good. I have distinguished my interest in publications and writing, as I am the editor/head of my high school's newspaper and have been editor in chief multiple times for newspapers that were distributed at Model United Nations (MUN) Conferences, most notable being THIMUN Singapore and THIMUN. Along with this interest, I am the president of my school's Spanish Honor Society as well as the Public Relations officer for my school's National Honor Society. I have been a member of MUN since 7th grade and have attended over 15 conferences. I am also a member of a club that works with animal shelters and therefore volunteer at shelters roughly once a month. I am also involved with a club focusing on improving environmental conditions in our local area, and go for regional cleanups monthly as well. I was the school's girls badminton team captain from 2012 to 2013, and have played the sport since 2010.

I was also awarded the Wellesley College book award during junior year.

Please chance me for the following universities!

Reach/ first choice - Amherst College (ED)

an ivy - just for the heck of it
University of Southern California
Wellesley College
Pomona College
Swarthmore College
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Emory University

some schools I consider safeties:
Wesleyan University
Brandeis University

I don’t know much about wellesley but I am pretty sure neither of those especially brandeis are safeties. More like matches. And the rest are reaches(just guessing I am not a lac aficionado)

I meant wesleyan in my post above

really? I checked Brandeis University statistics and my CR and M are above/within the mean range (610 -710 // 620 - 740). But that’s just SAT i guess :stuck_out_tongue: my main issue is my GPA but i have a feeling i may not be calculating it properly.

Yeah I wish it worked like that, but just being in the range or above for standardized test scores doesn’t qualify it as a safety. If that was the case then uchicago would be my safety, but unfortunately it isn’t. I wouldn’t worry though, you will in all likelihood get into brandeis and Wesleyan and probably get into a few or most of the other colleges, they just aren’t as sure of a bet as you would think

Before I chance you, I’d like to see your actual, unweighted GPA. Do you know how to calculate it? Each school does it differently.

I’m not entirely sure  I’m an IB Diploma student so our GPA is different and i think it’s on a 5.00 scale… I will double check with my counsellor and update this forum ASAP! Btw, thanks so much soontobegrad for the clarification :)

If you are an international applicant who is applying for financial aid, you realize some of the schools on your list don’t meet your need and expect you to pay the full amount.
