What are my chances for a SUNY/CUNY school in NYC? Or at least as good school in Long Island. I'm interested in majoring in English, Humanities or pre-law.

I have a 3.5 non-weighted average.

NO HONORS/ NO APs

I'm now in 12th grade. When I graduate, I would take 4 years of every core subject: Math, Science, Social Studies, French and English.

SAT score? No comment, it's way below average.

I go to a competitive catholic school where many people are distinguished in either athletics or academics. It is hard to stand out.

As for ECs, I've joined Newspaper every year and wrote an article about the '04 election in Sophomore year. It was not in the actual paper but the electronic publication.
I've also joined the Literary Magazine and Mock Trial but since I'm not very interested in ECs, I usually leave after a few weeks.
I was in JV basketball in 9th grade. The basketball is very competitive in my school, the girls team often goes to the state championships.

During the summer I work at a program where I help mentally retarded adults. I read to them, help the staff, do arts and crafts with them, etc.

My strength is in writing. My teaches always tell me I'm a great writer. I don't think they're bluffing either, I never ask them their opinions yet when I least expect it I get praise for my writing. There was even a time when my Social Studies teacher, told me I wrote the best essay she's seen in years and made the entire class appauld. It felt weird to me.

Writing even seems to get me out of trouble. To make a long story short, there was this girl who was annoying me for over a year and I got frustrated and almost got into a fight. The school dean, asked me to write a letter explaining what I did and why. I gave it to the secretary, who also read it then the dean read it. Now they're both asking me to give them stories that I wrote. I got suspended instead of expelled. Many people would get expelled for what I did at my strict school.

As for being suspended (they even asked me to see a psychiatrist), I know it would reflect poorly on my school record. What could I do to make up for it? Probably not much but I'm sure there is something. Other than that my record is spotless, I NEVER got into trouble. I didn't even get detentions. I wonder how I could tell the colleges, I don't have a behavior problem.

I wonder if I could write to the colleges about my weird situation. The disability I had to overcome to just be in a mainstream school just like everyone else. Things like ECs are a dread to me since it's a social situation. Interacting with people is a struggle sometimes, at least I tried.

I would go to a Community College but that would mean living with my parents and staying in Long Island. I don't want to do this.

What are my chances? Is there any SUNY/CUNY in NYC that would give me a chance? Which colleges have dorms? Any college without a dorm would be highly inconvient and an instant turn off. Any SUNY or CUNY college with dorms I have a chance in?

Thank you in advance.
