Hi I literally JUST made an account on this website hehe (:
Anyways, like most of the people on here, I'm applying for boarding school! ^O^ the schools I'm most interested in are Andover, St. Paul's, and Lawrenceville. I'm an Asian American living in Ohio. I'm in 9th grade at a public school, and I'm applying for 10th..
I don't do sports or play any instruments.. I wonder if that'll affect my application, seeing as thought almost everyone applying does at least some kind of extracurricular activity.. x)..
I recently came back from a two year stay in China.. I became an English tutor and taught English to kids there. I was also a host in an English speaking show that was held in my school.. I won a lot of awards for that. ^^ I've done community service helping children learn English (yeah .. English is important in Asia.), And I did 50 hours of community service in a public library in Las Vegas also..
I just started joining clubs in my freshman year, and I LOVE math And science, although I never won any awards for them.. /:

I having started applying yet.. I'm planning to do my interviews & recommendations next week or the week after. I'm also taking the SSAT in Jan. I've took it before, but my scores weren't sent to the schools because they were too bad >_>" I'm planning to get 85th-95th percentile this time.

I feel like I wrote a lot.. maybe it's because I'm doing it on my phone..
Anyways, comments will be very appreciated. Thanks:D

Not doing any sports or playing an instrument will definitely affect your chances unless you are a total genius. Not to be rude, but there are many Asians who have taught English to kids in Asia, myself included. For the public library, I’m not quite sure if that counts as community service. I have worked and organized fundraisers, can food drives and volunteered at the local animal and homeless shelter. If you got any awards in the clubs you should definitely mention that. I’m sorry to be all cynic and pessimistic, but I need to tell you the truth of how hard it is to get into those schools. You should aim higher a little higher for your SSAT also.

katrissred has offered good advice, in my opinion. Nevertheless, everything is premature until you have an actual SSAT score. What was your first SSAT score ? Obviously below 85%. Without sports or other ECs, you face an uphill challenge as these are three of the most selective boarding schools in the country. Try to expand the number of boarding schools to which you apply.

Woah i didn’t think I was going to get any replies… (:
@KatrissRed Yeah i realize that p: Thanks for the criticism, it helped. what schools are you applying for?
@Axelrod you’re right actually. I should expand, thanks for the advice!

If you are not already participating in sports, one month before the application deadline is not the time to be starting-- the admissions people are not impressed by last-minute resume padding.

Do not underestimate the difficulty of getting admitted into the schools you listed-- they are among the most-selective in the country. If you are intent on enrolling in a BS next fall, it would be pragmatic to cast a wider net.

I generally don’t comment on “Chance Me” threads, because they are a futile exercise…who can really say what your chances are except an AO at the schools to which you are applying? And while I see that several people have already chimed since I first saw your post…I have a strong opinion on your candidacy and wanted to share it:

From your name, I am assuming you are an Asian girl. When my daughter (also an Asian girl) was applying to schools, I was told by an AO that the Asian girl demographic is THE MOST COMPETITIVE APPLICANT GROUP. Too many have 99% SSAT, straight As, play an instrument well, and some even play a sport.

As noted by others already, you are also looking at three of the most selective schools in the country. They have their choice of smart Asian girls who can play and instrument AND play a sport…so you have to ask yourself: “Why would they pick me over another equally smart Asian girl who can also contribute to the orchestra and/or a sports team?” Only you can answer that question.

If you were my daughter, I’d advise you to cast a wider net.
