Debate team
Writing Club/Poetry Slam
Vice President of the Gay Straight Alliance
National Honors Society
World Language Honors Society
(I played Softball and Volleyball in Freshman year and Sophomore year I was in the Guidance Honors Association, but it was kind of a joke...)

I have over 200 volunteer hours so far, and over the summer I went to debate camp. I am also counting on great recommendations because I have teachers who have already offered them to me when I need them. I am going to France for 10 days in April to participate in an exchange program my school has. I am career shadowing a retired screenwriter for an independent project, and I work at the local library as a page.

Tests:
PLAN: 26
PSAT: 187 (perfect score on the writing section!)

I toured Barnard and went to a small session my school had with our admissions officer from there. I am absolutely in love with the school-- the buildings, the faculty, their outlook on education, everything they have in place for women to succeed, etc. I am probably going to apply early decision. I also did not mention this... I am a resident of Newtown High School in Newtown, CT. My mother was in the Sandy Hook School building teaching when it happened, and this has been the most terrible, life-changing time of my life. I spent countless days and hours there, and although I am still taking each day one at a time and it is relly up and down, I have been doing MANY things for my town, from volunteering to activism to creating programs and organizing funds to help my beautiful town come back. I will probably write about this in my essay...

How do I look for Barnard? What should I improve? Should I continue Orchestra? Should I send both tests (SAT and ACT)? If you have anything else, suggestions-wise, that would be great! Thanks!!!

EDIT It says I am “currently” a sophomore when I am listing my grades but I am a Junior!! Sorry about the confusion!

Your ECs are wonderful; you have leadership positions and have taken the initiative to start a club.! Also, your grades are good too, so does your class rigor. I don’t know much about Barnard, but I’m sure you have a promising chance.

As for standardized tests, take mocks of both SAT and ACT and see which test style you prefer or which one you score better on. Aim high, but don’t stress yourself for a score. Remember standardized tests aren’t the only scores colleges look at.

And one last thing, thank you for your work in Newtown. I live in VA now, but I was born and grew up less than 30 minutes away in New Milford, CT and still have ties to the area. I appreciate your help and you seem quite capable of restoring Newtown to how it was before!

Thanks for the response! I am going to take a Princeton Review course soon for the testing and hopefully that will show me a) how I’m doing on them and b) which one to focus on.

Thanks also for the response about my town. We are still recovering from shock, but there is already a sense of healing and moving forward. We cannot thank everyone enough for the kind words, thoughts, prayers, gifts, letters, etc. that have flooded to us. I just want everyone to know that we are stronger than this and that love will win!!!
