I come from an extremely low income family (Less than 15000 a year.) My parents are divorced and I live with my mom. I am a first generation college attendee.

Thanks so much for your help. I know these can be annoying. Please be brutally honest

hmm… don’t take my word for it because a lot of people here know better about what your realistic chances are but I can definitely say that it’s a reach. I don’t know whether a high or medium reach etc. but you definitely have a shot at getting it :)

I think it depends upon a few things–
(1) How you do on your AP test (need at least a 4, and a 5 is preferable)
(2) Did you get any recognition as a result of the Science Olympiad (honorable mention or finish in first through third places?)
(3) How do you expect to do on your SAT Achievement tests?

You didn’t even mention #3–and in my view, you will need a 32 or 33 on the ACT, plus at least one of your SAT achievement tests being a 770 or above, and the other one being at least 660 or above to have a chance.

If you can do all of the above, then you have a good chance, especially given that you’ve been living in a single family household with major financial limitations.

P.S. I was accepted at Brown, although I couldn’t attend for financial reasons (obviously, I was accepted before Brown started offering full financial grants.) Best of luck to you.

That is my weighted GPA my school does this really wierd thing where there are no A+ so the only way to get a above a 4.0 is AP classes which are on a 4.5 scale. Honors classes are not weighted. AP history was the only one offered 10th grade. Gov stats and psyche were offered this year but i could only fit one due to science classes. But I am taking the most rigorous course load at my school.

As for Science Olympiad we have gotten 1st place at regional’s every year I have metaled every year. This year I got 3 second places at regional’s and a 3rd place at state’s in my individual events. The team got 8th overall at States.

I am taking the SAT subject tests in june.
I will be applying regular decision bc my GPA will be like 4.3 at that time due to the AP Classes.

Oh I also was the one that organized AP comparitive Government. They didn’t offer it at my school but I talked to my AP US government teacher and she said she would do it if I got enough kids. So I campaigned for weeks and we got enough kids for the class. My Government teacher will give me an amazing recommendation.
Also, my ACC Trig teacher wanted me to take the AP AB Calc test. He has never asked anyone to do this before so I was honored. I self studied and two weeks before the test I went down to the calc room. I think I got a 4 (at least I hope so.)

Your grades are definitely good enough, but are you passionate about anything? If you can make yourself stand out through an interview and essays, you should have a good chance of getting in. Good Luck!

I am passionate about being pro life that is why i stared the life appreciation club. I plan to do a lot with it last year because i just started it.

Your grades are there, your ACT (I believe) will go up to that 33, I think that you’ll get 700+ on SAT IIs, and your passion (as you’ve established) is loving life. Just write an amazing essay and you have one great rec, just get one more solid one. I think that your definitely on the right track to getting in, and as far as FA goes, I think that if you get in you receive full free-ride tuition because your income is so low!!! Good luck!

Thanks. My ACC Trig teacher will also give me a great rec, the one who encouraged me to take the AP clac test. Cool im not stressing as much now.

Im thinking of George Mason as my back up. What do you think my chances there are and what scholarships do you guys think ill get?

If you live in VA, you are in. If you’re OOS, I’m still surmising you’ll get in. From what I’ve heard, it’s really no that hard to get into George Mason, and I would almost call it a safety for you, especially since you’re aiming for Brown (good choice, my favorite!). I may be wrong, but I think you’re in!

I am fairly positive ill get in but do u think ill get good scholarships bc they dont have as good need based aid as brown, but they do have decent merit aid.

As a whole, you are a legit candidate. But, most applicants to such schools are. If you show great passion for your love of life (through rallies I’d assume?), and maybe write an essay on it, I think you have a good shot. Also, Brown probably covers everything for families in your situation.

Your passionate pro-life stance will definitely help your application, it will definitely stand out at a mostly liberal school (at least in reputation) like brown.

I think it’ll come down to your essay and improved ACT score. Maybe try the SAT. Money wont be a huge problem if you get in. First gen college bound is good too. You have a good chance try to get the ACT up just a tad
