Bump bump bump

Bump, please chance. Will chance you back.

im a florida student also and from my perspective youre golden buddy haha

question though. are you applying as a freshmen or a transfer?

I have the option to do both actually. If I get rejected from a school, I do have the option to apply as a transfer. However, I will be applying as a freshman to all these schools.

Bump bump, please chance.

Please? Could someone chance me? I’m really really curious. I’ve gotten one chance so far. Please help.

Could someone chance me? Anyone? Please?

con - Hmm, your a senior in high school but you only took 1 ap class (ap psychology)? Even though your unweighted gpa is good (not sure what weighted core is and how you can get over a 5.0 on weighted gpa). Also I think your extracurricular activities need to be somewhat related to your major in chemistry. You don’t have many community service hours either.
pro - your sat scores are higher than average for the colleges that you mentioned except maybe northwestern in which I think your about average and your SAT II scores are outstanding.
Results:
BU - i think in
BC - match
Northwestern - reach
Sorry, don’t know the other two. Can you chance me back?

Hey fellow Floridian! I went to undergrad at UF and am currently a grad student there. I assist on admissions selections so my opinions are based a lot on the process we use there…

UM- Safety, would be shocked if you didn’t get in.
BU- I’d consider it a safety for you-- in.
UF- *Match (but more of a safety than BC and NU).
BC- A good match. Think you’re in.
NU- Reach but a good shot.

*Just a note about admissions at UF right now. They are a bit strange. The school wants to attract high caliber students like yourself but will often reject students with stats on the higher end of the school’s range simply to protect their yield rate which, I believe, goes into rankings. They also assume high achieving students will have no problem getting into other universities.

ilucky27- I hate to reply to this in place of the original poster but just wanted to point out he clearly says above that he goes to a collegiate high school where he’ll have both a HS diploma and an associates degree completed upon graduation.

Also, it really doesn’t matter if your EC’s are geared toward an intended major. Or that you’re involved in everything humanly possible. Most college students change their majors 2 or 3 times and admissions committees are well aware of that. They simply want to see that a student didn’t lay around doing nothing in high school.

Hmmm, alright, thanks a lot. Also, to drg0nz0, the school I go to is extremely well liked by University of Florida. I think around 50% of our students (graduating class of 175 or so) attend UF, with a good portion of the remaining 50% being accepted but choosing to go elsewhere. Our guidance counselor mentioned how UF once accepted a student from our school with a 970 on the SAT. I’m a tad nervous about UF, but I do have two chances of getting in, which are transferring as a junior or applying regular decision to UF. And to ilucky27 the GPA when including AP, IB and Dual Enrollment courses goes up to 6.0. I’ve been in this program for 2 years, and was only allowed to take one AP course at my previous high school.

On a side note, is there anything I could do to help ensure acceptance to UF, drg0nz0? I’d be rather annoyed at getting rejected from there since its one of my top picks.

drg0nz0 I’ve always wondered about UF admissions. I go to an IB school and a lot of well qualified people are rejected, along with people that have around the same stats. Yet a couple of low stats people get accepted, it’s really weird.

And wrightzw that is really impressive, our school only gets ~30 acceptances a year and UF is a top choice for many (like myself). I guess they do expect some people to go to better universities - but in the end most of them go to other ones in Florida

geez, im applying to some of those schools, and some of your stats are way higher than mine! i think you’re pretty solid at BU, with a respectable chance at BC. chance me back?

You have really hard classes, good extracurriculars, and appropriate test scores for all your schools.

Boston University: Reach
Boston College: Accepted
Northwestern University: Reach
University of Florida: Accepted for sure (I’m in Florida, too)
University of Miami: Accepted

Your classes are really impressive, though, so I think that you have a shot anywhere you apply.

Chance me back please!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1000161-yale-scea-upenn-ed-ill-chance-back-d.html

Wrightzw – I went to a high school that sounds very similar to yours. Around half the students went to UF and one girl got accepted with a 2.9 and a sub-1000 SAT! The good relationship your high school and UF has will definitely give you a boost. Since the university is aware of the excellence of your school, they don’t have to worry much about things like grade inflation.

As far as ensuring an acceptance, there isn’t too much more you can do. You have the great stats, awards and ECs. My advice is that you really try to convey in your application how much you’d love to be gator, how you bleed orange and blue, etc. (even if it isn’t true). Admissions loves students that are chomping at the bit to get in and have marked UF as their first choice. Now, if for some strange reason you do not get in as a freshman, you should have no problem being admitted as a transfer.

Bugger- The admissions can be really strange right? I think UF suffers from “Tufts Syndrome” i.e. they are sick of being a safety school for high-achieving students. Also, they really like to preserve the “yield rate” (the percentage of students admitted that actually enroll at the university) and can do that by selecting students with lower stats. That’s why I think its important to show, through your application, how UF is your first choice. This should become less of an issue considering our current President is hell bent on making us a “Top 10” public school and that acceptance rates are at a record low (about 33% I think?).

wrightzw - I am curious as to why you won’t be applying as a transfer to the Florida schools? As a transfer you’ll come in at junior status, whereas they’ll cap the amount of credits accepted (only 30 at UF, not sure about UM) if you apply as freshman.

Well, because I earn an AS and I don’t just have random college credits, they’re actually required to accept 60 credits (the minimum amount needed for an AS). And my parents would like me to spend at least 3 years there deciding what I want to do with my life, though I already have a good idea what I’d like to do, and if I started as a junior, I’d only be able to go for two years with a maximum of 60 credits due to bright futures, at least thats what I’ve been informed. So applying as a freshman still nets me 60 credits, and the full 4 years of college from Bright Futures. Transferring is usually only if you get rejected from a school.

And thank you again for evaluating me. Also, I’ll make sure to work into the essay about how I want to be a gator, and how I’ve been prepared to be a gator and what not.

That makes sense. I didn’t even think about Bright Future’s only paying for 60 credits but it of course makes sense. I definitely think kids need at least 3 years (or 4 or 5!) to figure out things .

Also I should clarify about trying to convey to admissions that UF is a top choice. Just “be yourself” in essays and where relevant you can put in stuff that makes it seem like you’ve been dying to go to UF. Admissions loves applications that are well thought out and have a lot of effort put into them. What they hate is something that was hastily thrown together right before the deadline simply because the student didn’t get into any of their other choices.

You’ll be fine though with stats like that!
