K This is my first post on this site, and im going a senior on now. I want to go to one of these schools here is some info

African American
3.1 UW 4.0 W
50%, But i got to a small school only 75 people ranked top 10 in my area.
I have taken almost all Honors ans AP class.
I have played football, Taken TWO year of Rotc, And have been in many programs as a leader.
Also I got a 1700 on the sat going to retake in october 12rh. so i probably get a 1750

that is about it

I know that i can probably get into Nc state, and chapel no prob, but i really want to be chanced on Wake, duke, and the ivies i think around a 50 percent chance what do you guys think?

I don’t want to sound too harsh, but looking at the admission statistics for the colleges on your list, your grades and scores are below the 25% of admitted students for all of them. Your chances at these colleges are not high.

Condider that for Duke and the Ivy’s the lower 25% is an SAT >2000, UNC about 1800 at least, Wake about 1900.

The honors and AP, ROTC and football stand in your favor. You have a chance of acceptance at UNC and NCSU, but how large that chance is isn’t predictable and it isn’t something you can rely on. It would be wise to also apply to other colleges where your chances of admission are higher. Otherwise you will risk not being accepted at all. For Wake, Ivy’s and Duke, honestly, the chances are very slim for many applicants.

Take a close look at some of the other NC colleges. There are some very good choices and depending on what you wish to study, some may be better fits than others for you.

The hell I too ap classes though, and that’s still not enough for duke ■■■. Wow I really thought taking ap classes would get me into to 20 schools…

Unc does want me though they send me a lot of emails saying to apply so I can say that’s a saftey so does university of Chicago they send me invitations all the time.

Colleges send information to a lot of students encouraging them to apply, but this is no indication that the school “wants” a student or that this student is likely to be admitted.

There are more students in this country taking AP classes than there are places for them in the top 20 colleges. Taking AP classes is helpful in getting accepted by one of them. One could say that most students accepted to these colleges have taken AP classes. What you can not say is that most students who take AP classes will get accepted to these schools.

You have however done yourself a lot of good by taking AP classes. You have challenged yourself and by taking them you have also been better prepared for the rigor of college. Taking AP classes increases someone’s chances of admission, but it doesn’t guarantee them.

UNC has a 27% admission rate. This is not a safety college. For a college to be a safety, it has to have a higher acceptance rate and a student’s academic credentials should be at the top of the applicant pool, not the bottom. An additional consideration is that it is affordable.

UNC, NCSU are reaches for you. They are within reach but not safeties. Chicago is a high reach for anyone. You can apply to any reach school and see what happens, but to increase the chance that you will be accepted to college, you need more choices on your list where your credentials are at the middle to top of the application pool.

If you want suggestions from posters on CC for colleges to add to your list, post what areas you are interested in studying and then people can suggest additional NC colleges that might be good fits.

I think it’s great that you take AP classes and have a rigorous high school schedule on your transcript. You did well and your GPA shows it. Congrats.

But who told you that would be enough to get you into Duke? You also need interesting extracurriculars and top notch standardized test scores. Your SAT is much lower than the average accepted student at Duke.

I Took the ACT got a 23 which is great, but still low. I want to go to duke, but it seems like im not even close to getting into this since my SAT and gpa arent good enough. IDK i want to major in finance, or biology.

I hate to tell you, but 23 on the ACT is not great. Only 2% of Duke students in the 2013 incoming class had ACT of 23 or less.

Wake Forest is your best choice. They are test optional. Your good rigor and excellent GPA should help you get in there. No need to submit your SAT or ACT scores.

For those two interests, consider UNC Charlotte. Chapel Hill has a great business school but it is very competitive to get into, and being admitted to UNC doesn’t guarantee admission to the business school. I am not entirely sure about the process at UNCC but I think students who have successfully completed the prerequisite courses can declare it as a major. Charlotte has many businesses so it could have some good opportunities for internships. For biology, the college has a biology major, and also health science majors.

This college has a lot to offer. NC has some colleges (UNC, NCSU) that are very well known, but although the others may appear to be in the shadows, they are very strong colleges on their own. Your admission statistics are in the middle for UNCC.

Wake Forest is test optional- which makes it a possibility. Still apply to UNC and NCSU. Duke and the Ivys are up to you. Hower, to be safe, there must also be colleges like UNCC on your application list.

You will get honest advice here, some of which can be disappointing, but most people who advise you want to see you succeed. Making a balanced college list is one way to be as certain as possible that you will be on your way to college next year.
