What are my chances of getting into CLA, CEHD and CFANS for Fall 2012 ? I am a senior. Not sure what I want to major in - possibly Economics, Applied Economics or Kinesiology depending on which school I get in (or later transfer to Business).

GPA 3.0 < had a real bad Soph year, a couple of Fs on easy courses >
ACT 29
Several AP/Enriched courses
AP Statistics 3, AP Comp 4 (doing 4 more AP this year)
Many EC but no leadership role
Work experience in Retail
Decent Recs
Definitely not in the top 50% of my class

I am a resident of MN.

Firstly, just a word of advice: Don’t apply for CEHD or CFANS unless you actually have an intended major in either of those departments. Becaue they have easier admissions requirements than CLA, they used to be known as a ‘back door’ into the U of M but the admissions committee caught on to this trend and they’re starting to crack down on applicants applying CFANS and CEHD who aren’t clearly passionate about those subject areas.

As far as your chances, I’d say they’re definitely not in your favor. Two years ago when it was a little easier to get in, I applied with the same GPA, good EC’s and a 27 ACT and I WAS in the top half of the class, and I was waitlisted. I eventually had to transfer in after freshman year from another university.

Most students accepted into the U are top ~20% of their high school class. If you write a killer essay and have good recs, you might pull through but if I had to guess, you’ll get waitlisted.
