Chances for Columbia College?

Hi, Chances please? Thank you in advanced!
I would be applying Early Decision to Columbia College

Male Latino in Eugene, Oregon
High School rarely sends people to Ivies, but we did win the goldman sachs award this year, so it is still a competitive school.
I wouldn't need financial aid, i don't know if that affects decision..
UW G.P.A.:3.89
School does not rank. :-/
SAT: 2240

IB Full Diploma Candidate

I can speak three languages fluently, English (duh), Spanish and French. I got a five on both the French and Spanish AP Tests

I am captain of both the Varsity Soccer and Tennis Teams.

ASB President

NHS President, and member for two years

Eagle Scout

Over 200 Community Service Hours, some at Food 4 Lane ( something to help end hunger problems in Eugene), and then at Sylvan helping students with troubles learning spanish and french improve. I might get letters of rec. from them.

Varsity Choir

Senior Course Load:
AP Spanish
AP French
AP Calculus
AP Theory of Knowledge
AP Literature
AP Biology

Chances please. :-) Let me know if you need any more information. Thank you so much!

You can make it! Apply!

(I never say this, btw)

excuse my ignorance but to be an IB full diploma candidate don't you have to be taking IB classes?

Otherwise I think you have a decent shot

ok....just read that....i think you have more than a decent shot....you have quite a good shot

i'm assuming your SAT is decently balanced and that you'll own the SAT IIs

good luck!

....i'm sure that means a whole lot coming from some HS student

Shraf, just what is the point of you quoting me and saying that? I'm not boosting myself to anything. For a college student (or graduate, whatever you are, or even HSer, IDK) the entire ellipse followed by that comment is just petty.

Don't make implications about what I am qualified to say or not say. The thread is posted in a forum where HS students talk about college. It is assumed that many (if not all) responses will come from HS students or college students. Assumming only "college" people are qualified to make claims, these students are not part of the current applicant pool, and stats-wise not as comparable as '09ers that are applying. There is little ethos in anything anyone on the site says, because we are all strangers talking in an internet forum. A person poses as they please -- they can make-up credentials and give advice and whether the OP chooses to respond to that is the OP's prerogative. Nobody's advice on this site is tangible. One might also question the value of posting stats on a site for strangers to evaluate. Keep the malicious irony to yourself. You're firestarting, and as a seasoned CCer, you're well aware of that.

dying4ivy, I am fully Hispanic. I know few of us make it to the 2200 or even 2100+ range of SAT scores. You have the numbers to get into any school you want, so anything anyone (well-qualified and educated as they might be) on this site says shouldn't dissuade you from applying. Of course whilst a majority of Chances Threads come from eager rising seniors looking for an ego boost, do not delve into that vanity and apply with sophistication and confidence. Best of luck in all your endeavors.

thanks Techy233. :-) , it really is true though, at least in the city I live in, I am probably the smartest latino. Does it really make that much of a difference on the east coast with acceptance?

does anyone know. cuz i wanna go to a bunch of schools over there...anyone?

"thanks Techy233. :-) , it really is true though, at least in the city I live in, I am probably the smartest latino. Does it really make that much of a difference on the east coast with acceptance?"

according to whom? don't ever put yourself on such a subjective pedestal.

It matters for little that you have the best grades / score of all the latinos in your town (if something this remote is true). If you're valedictorian it helps, if you have some city/county award it helps, putting yourself in a small sample and saying you're the best doesn't do anything, if you don't have proper evidence it only hurts you as you appear pompous.

You will be competing against kids from all over Oregon and with kids from all over the US / globe. So if your town is filled with lemons, it'll be tougher to prove you a star on an overall scale. not applying for financial aid does not help, being latino does help, but it's still tough to get in.

All considered I think you have a good shot ED. There's nothing sub-par about your profile, sat I is where it should be, good luck.

y would i make a snarky comment like that if i were a HS student...and its not petty....i was mostly pointing out how unnecessarily arrogant you sound

i'll be sure not to answer any of your questions about columbia since you only value the opinions/experiences of highschoolers and not students/alums

this is the most arrogant thing you could possibly say and is, of course, absolutely silly....if you do get into an ivy league (which, in general, is highly unlikely) make sure to point out to all your professors who had attended the school (or some other ivy) that you are smarter/more qualified than them because u were in the current application pool

i mean of course this is theoretically possible...but don't you think the real students/alums would easily catch someone who doesn't know what they're talking about? Also, some of us actually have met one another (or knew each other) outside this internet forum.

i am the first to say that that chances threads are dumb and only respond to those where the person is really on the fence or where my advice can help the poster. I see little reason to respond to those who have awesome stats and are just showing off or those who know they don't have a chance and are just here to argue.

u should approach this process (and most things in life) with humility

I don't know: I find it pretty ironic that an arrogant person is advising another person not to be arrogant.

dying4ivy, you have an excellent chance.

first of all even if you weren't URM (saying this because you're hispanic) you would have a great chance especiallly if you applied Early Decision.

BUT since you're URM you have an EXCELLENT CHANCE! APPLY Early Decision and right a great essay and I'd say you'll get accepted!

Anyway Good Luck!

The irony here is pretty funny.

What this poster says carries a loooooot of weight..

^Teehee.

OP: Your SAT scores are not spectacular for CU, but, like people have said, since you're Latino your scores will be viewed a lot more. . . "nicely?" Everything else is also pretty good, but not spectacular. Given that you're applying ED, and given your race, you stand a good chance. Assuming you actually accomplished something meaningful at Sylvan, definitely get a LOR from whomever you were working for.
