Hey guys, I was considering applying here. What do you think my chances are?

I am a hispanic male from New York.

GPA: 3.4 unweighted.
-My highschool is one of the most vigorous in the nation, in the top 100 for most prestigious public and private high schools (I go to a public school). So grade inflation is completely non existent. Our valedictorian (out of 1500 students) has a 3.9 My school doesn't rank students, but I would guess top 25% if I had to.

SAT: 2050 - 650 R - 800 M - 600 W

ACT: 31 Composite

I have taken 4 APs during my high school career:
AP Comp Sci AB
AP European History
AP American History
AP Biology

Extra Curriculars:
-National Hispanic Scholar Award (Honorable Mention)
-Assistant teacher in my school's intro to computer science class. I am currently the only student in my school (and district) to be doing a teaching role like this.
-Varsity Football
-Various overseas voulenteer works. ~100 hours

I also have very strong recommendations, especially from my computer science teacher. Who recieved two masters from Carnegie Mellon. He basically feels i am one of the most ambitious students he has ever come accross (at least in the field of computer science)

The recommendations will not matter at all, because the U of I doesn’t read them. Infact, it might be detrimental to your application so send them.

The 3.4 is low for CS. ACT is good.

I’m sure you’ll get into DGS or LAS but I’m not so sure about Computer Science.

Good Luck.

And apply soon.

^ oops. I said “so send them,” meant to say “to send them.”

To clarify, do not send recs.

^ CS is in both the engineering and LAS colleges.

it doesn’t matter much though because you’ll get into both, OP

wait you think he has a shot for it? cuz my stats r pretty similar to urs and im applyin for Comp sci as well…

LAS will happen. You will get in.

But no one’s getting into UIUC Engineering with a 3.4. Not gonna lie, a 31 ACT isn’t THAT impressive considering the middle 50% for CoE is 31-33.

The guy has an 800 SAT Math. If you don’t apply you’ve got zero chance. You’re competitive but a little low in GPA. Depending on the rigor of the courses that your HS offered, and whether or not you actually took them, as well as your essays will determine whether you get in. You’ve got a 50/50 shot. I’d categorize you as a slight reach/reach.

Cody: I don’t mean to be patronizing to the OP, but the fact that he’s Hispanic will help a lot in admissions.

His TAing for the intro computer science class should help him a lot in admissions–it shows that he already knows what he wants to do and isn’t just stumbling into the major because he likes playing video games or whatever . . .
