Hi everyone,

I'm currently a community college student. I have a 3.93 GPA and will be applying to UIUC for the spring semester as a CS major. I have met most of the requirements, except I still need 2 physics courses. However, I will have under 60 credit hours, so I should only need to meet sophomore transfer requirements. I do not have many extra curriculars, but I have been working for a small property management company managing databases and other IT related tasks.

Also, I was wondering if it would be a good choice to submit my ACT scores when I apply. Since I have over 30 hours of transferable credit, I am not required to send ACT scores. It does say on UIUC's website that they highly recommend that I do anyway. My issue is that although I have a 31 composite score with a 33 in science, my math score was a bit lower, 27 to be exact. What would you suggest? And what do you think my chances of being accepted are?

Also, I forgot to mention that I am in-state.

bump. Did any of you transfers opt NOT to send your ACT scores to the college of engineering, and did you get accepted?

With less than 60 semester hours of transferrable credit, you will be evaluated the same way freshman are evaluated: via High School GPA, HS Course rigor, Standardized test scores, and extraCurriculars. Your ACT composite is fine, but you have a good college record. I’d try to meet the transfer requirements for junior transfer, but it’s up to you.

Balthezar,

This is from UIUC’s website under “Transfer Admissions”

High school performance and ACT/SAT scores will be reviewed if you are applying with less than 30 graded transferable college credit hours at the time of review

Doesn’t this imply that as long as I have over 30 credit hours, my HS stats will NOT be evaluated when making an admissions decision?

An ACT composite of 31 looks to be 97th percentile. It would probably be in your best interest to send that along to confirm that you are indeed capable of handling the rigorous CS course work. While your CC average is very high, the truth is that it’s not much effort in many CC classes to get an A by doing little more than showing up and paying half attention. In other words, the combo will show that you are both diligent and intellectually capable.

Thanks for the advice. The only part that worried me was my low subscore in math. Hopefully my technical GPA will offset that

Can anyone confirm my response to Balthezar? I’m really interested in the role high school stats play in admissions when applying with 30-60 credit hours.

“Lower-division transfer applicants are required to submit official high school transcripts; preference will be given to students who would have been admitted as freshmen to UIUC.”

What that means is that even if you have over 30 semester hours of transferable credit, but you have less than 60, High School transcripts are required, and will be used during the application review process. If the combination of Standardized test score and HS Transcripts would have gotten you admitted as a freshman, “preference” will be given to you for any available slots.

While technically standardized test scores are not required, why would you not send in your 31 composite. Yes, the math score is a bit on the low side but the 31 overall is a plus.

As for your HS transcripts use in evaluating your application, they are looked at and used as a component of an entire application review. No one can tell you how much, or little they will weigh in the evaluation of your application, but they definitely will be looked at.

Okay, thank you for clarifying.
