anyone ?

need opinions

I’d say it’s about a mid-reach for you. Your scores are pretty good, but I think you should consider taking SAT II Bio again since 700 although good, may not be at the standards of applicants. Besides, you took it in 9th grade and can possibly do much better on it now.

Your ECs don’t really have anything that stand out, so I don’t think that’ll help much. Remember that although ED has a higher acceptance rate, that’s partly because the applicants are (generally) a lot stronger than RD ones. So tougher competition. All you can do now is work on studying for your SAT IIs (why are you taking both Math I and II?) and make sure those essays are good! Good luck!

@Truust I was going to take bio again but i had the june SAT as well as many AP tests twoards the end of the year so there was no time. I signed up for both and am studying for Math II but doing pretty poorly on the practice tests so i may have to take math I. and yes i know my GPA is kinda’ve low. I’m hoping my leadership in community service as well as my Essay’s help. I know i don’t have lots of EC’s but the ones i do have i’ve been committed to. Any advice on anything i can do to make myself more appealing as a candidate? This is my absolute first choice school and to be accepted would be the greatest feeling in the world! (although i know my chances are quite low because i am not a very strong applicant)

@Trusst why would i take SAT bio again and not math? after all sicne i’m applying to the business program and my 8th/9th grade math averages were rather weak i’m doing everything i can to bolster my math skills and show i can handle rigor.

Your GPA is a bit low (as you stated above), but besides that, Cornell is definitely not out of reach!

No I didn’t mean don’t take math! I meant take either Math I or Math II (preferebly math II if you’re able to). Sorry for the confusion.

I’m applying ED to Cornell too this year and I know exactly how you feel…

I think the best thing you can do now is get those essays to be perfect. The supplement gives you a good opportunity to talk about how the school is a perfect fit for you, so do as much research on the individual school you’re applying to. Talk about a visit if you’ve been there… And anything else you like. Good essays can help your chances considerably in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice @Truust! Good luck to you! :)

I would say that Cornell is a Mid-Reach. Your SAT fits in with the rest of the applicants, but your GPA is somewhat low compared to everyone else who is applying. You have strong ECs, which are good, but nothing that takes you to the next level. However, having a good essay and rec letters is what should set you apart from everyone else. Good luck!

Mind chancing back?

What is the difference between reach mid reach match and mid match . I’m confused by the whole system

Yeah i was just about to ask, what is a “mid reach”

The mid 50% of SAT is about 1500 (M+CR) from 2013 for acceptances, and 75% of kids had a 4.0 un-weighted GPA. So definitely a reach.

I was considering Dyson as well. However, I recently discovered that is easier to get into Cornell by applying to a different school or just CALS, and then transfer into Dyson, since the only thing Dyson look at for Cornell transfer students is their GPA, and the requirement is only a 2.75 to get in. Each year, Dyson has about 50 internal transfer students, and I’ve heard from 5-6 Dyson 2013 transfer students that it is VERY easy to get in by doing this. I plan to do the same thing :)

@jlee2000 do you think it would be a better idea for me to transfer internally? Would i just apply to CALS undecided…but wouldn’t that hurt my chances?

You can’t apply to CALS with undecided, you have to pick a major. But yes, the idea is to apply to an easier major like Ecology or something, and then transfer in internally lol
