Chances for Cornell ED and UChicago EA?

Mmkay, here we go.

I attend a large-ish public high school in Texas and am part of a math-and-science program within it.

Asian (Chinese) female, upper middle class

Class Rank: 12/625
GPA: 4.0 UW, 5.09 W
SAT: 2390 (800 M + 790 CR ...lol... + 800 W)
ACT: Didn't take, not planning on it
SAT II: World History 800, Math II 790, Chemistry 790, Literature 790
AP Exams: World History 5, European History 5, Chemistry 4, APUSH 5, English Language 5, Statistics 4, Calculus AB 5
Senior Year Courseload: Anatomy & Physiology Honors, Organic Chemistry Honors, AP English Literature, AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Calculus BC, AP Government/Macroeconomics

Awards: NMS, AP Scholar with Distinction, Scholastic Writing Awards regional winner for fiction (selected for national judging), a couple of state piano awards, published in nationally/internationally recognized literary magazine + another one pending, published in research paper for a summer internship, regional (Houston) science fair awards, accepted to New England Young Writers' Conference at Breadloaf but couldn't attend due to a school conflict, some minor district/school awards

Extracurriculars: A looot of work with literary magazines and editing other publications, Science Bowl (Vice-President), essay tutor, math tutor, volunteer at local hospital, volunteered at public library, research internship in the Texas Medical Center last summer, piano, freelance writing for some online magazines, run my own figure skating blog with a wide international audience, helped lead student groups during annual can drives to raise $10k+, general honor societies (NHS, NEHS), Iowa Young Writers' Studio 2012 (summer program that's more or less the equivalent of RSI for creative writing), Bard College Young Writers' Workshop 2013 (another well-known summer program)

Teacher recommendations: Should be pretty good (stellar from English, above-average from math)

Additional recommendation: Yep. It should really showcase my love for creative writing.

Essays: Common App is original, I think, and should stand out; supplements are pretty generic but I'm working on making them more specific

Summary: Basically a lot of creative writing and biology/medicine. Last summer, I also got really into astronomy and taught myself from online courses and textbooks, and I'm going to be the itinerant astronomy teacher for Science Bowl this year.

I have a pretty good CW portfolio, but neither Cornell nor UChicago accept such supplementary materials. I'm also applying to a HUUUGE writing competition known as YoungArts this year, so any awards won (fingers crossed...) will be considered national honors.

Some other info: My calculus teacher this year is really, really scattered when it comes to giving tests over the material he actually "taught," and unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. As a result, my calculus grade is less-than-stellar right now, so I've been teaching myself the topics to make sure I fully understand them. That's the only class in which I might be lagging when it comes time to send the fall report, but if all goes well, I could end up with an A-, which is far better than what I have right now.

Cornell ED: High match
U Chicago EA: Reach (pay attention to the prompts)

If you’re comfortable with Villanova, Villanova then becomes your safety (if no accelerated med is involved)…

I actually need to start my UChicago prompts…

Facepalm

Anyway, I have some decent (I think) ideas for those. I’m not sure how original/out-there they’ll be, though.

I hope you like Ithaca, because at the rate this is going, they’ll probably accept you so fast I won’t be amazed when that stuff comes back Pony Express… (sorry, favorite book AP English book, maybe you’ll get the reference)

But in all seriousness…I wish I had your stats for my Cornell ED app. I really see no downsides in this app. If this was a “higher” Ivy, I’d say “reach” because sometimes everything looks the same to those admissions officers…From the Cornell officer’s perspective, you’ll shine. I wish you best of luck. Cornell=match, and its the first time I’ve said that in one of these threads.

In the Uchicago side…you have numbers. And accomplishments. Now you need quirk. If you do reflect it in your app, you have a low reach there. Problem is, ED cornell will probs lock you in for four years…

Chance back if you will? I’d love to hear the perspective of someone who’s much higher qualified than I am to get realistic input on Cornell ED, tufts, etc…

Thanks!

Hahahahah what are the chances. I thought you wanted to go to NYU?

I’d say you’re in at Cornell ED (pretty damn good for unhooked applicant). If you apply Cornell RD, you might get waitlisted or rejected since Cornell admissions might think you’ll get in to a school higher up in the university hierarchy and pass on them. As for UChicago, you’ve probably heard that writing phenomenal essays will give you a chance once you have top academic stats.

If I were you, I’d do Chicago EA, then Cornell RD unless Cornell is absolutely your #1.

@Texasian0:

Lucy? O.O

Hahah no, but she’s on here sometimes too. Do you really want to bind yourself at Cornell? I think you can go for more!

Btw I’m one spot under you lul

@Everyone else:

Thank you for the wisdom & kind words! Fingers crossed from now until mid-December!

Wait…Kenny!!! :p

Anyway, whoever you are, thanks. Haha. I’ve thought about this for a long time and really feel that I make a good match with the Cornellian English department. Obviously the choice is up to them, though.

Hahahahahah no

Well, that’s good! If you were RD, it might have been a low reach/high match, but with ED, I can’t see them saying no.

Yeah, you’ve got Cornell in the bag IMHO. Focus on the essays for UChicago (which should be no problem for you, punk).

YOU. TWO.

Those UChicago essays kinda need to get written, don’t they? Meh. I guess I should start…

Hey beautiful.

What up gurl

Wow obviously not referring to you
