Hi everyone, I'm a rising senior, planning to apply to Cornell ED. I was just wondering what you guys think my chances are for Cornell.

Just general information: I'm a white caucasian male living in New England. I'm applying for a reasonable amount of financial aid.

SAT I: 2350
SATII's: Math IIC: 790, Lit: 760, Bio E: 740, Physics: 790, US History: 800
AP's: AP Physics C: 5, AP Calculus BC: 5, AP Lang: 5, AP Computer Science: 3, AP U.S. History: 5, AP Econ: 5
Grades: Freshmen: 3.3, Sophomore: 3.3, Junior: 3.9/4.0, I intend to get good grades for my senior year.

EC's:
Sports: Varsity Cross Country 4 years (Co-Captain Next Year), Varsity Squash 4 years

Arts: A Capella Group (2 years), Chamber Choir (Required Audition) (3 years), Play the violin for fun (10 years), Guitar for fun as well (2 years)

Leadership: Proctor in Dormitory (Junior Year), Head Proctor in Dormitory (Senior Year), President of Community Service Club, Vice President of Debate Team (Senior Year) Won numerous competitions in New England, Vice President of our school's International Relations Association: Publishes bi-weekly magazine regarding world issues, Sports Editor for our school's official Newspaper: Again, bi-weekly publication.

If you apply ED, I’d put your chances somewhere in the 30-40% range. As csdad said, your GPA is likely problematic; if you’re in the top 10% of your class, you can probably put your chances up another 10%.

Thanks Everyone who replied! I was wondering though, will my freshmen and sophomore year grades bring me down that much even though my gpa last year (junior year) was better?

I don’t think u will get in early decision, primarily because of your grades, but u have outstanding standardized test scores, so it is definitely worth a shot!

Yes, your freshman/sophomore grades hurt you when applying to Cornell. There will be many applicants whose GPAs were high all 4 years and generally speaking GPA>>test scores. That said, other aspects of your application are excellent so your chances aren’t terrible at all.

You guys have all been so helpful! Thank You! One last question though, I also plan on applying to Emory, Northwestern, UC Berkeley, Amherst College, Middlebury, Boston College, Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon (All competitive schools). Since my chances for Cornell are in, as mickeyc765 puts it, the 30-40% range, how will my chances look for each of these schools?? Sorry, I know this is the Cornell Section of the website…

You do have outstanding test scores, and lots of ec’s. But the gpa is low, and the test scores show that you weren’t trying in your first two years.

That said, you have a good shot at getting into one or more of the schools on your list. Still, you ought to have a few safety schools on the list.

Best of luck, you sound like a kid who’s really matured in the past year.
