ED chances...

I'm 90% sure as of now that I want to apply ED to Cornell, as it's my clear first choice, and although I've posted these stupid chances things before, I'd sort of like your take on it in this forum...

White, middle class male, upstate NY

SAT: 2300 (720cr, 780m, 800w- 78mc 12essay)
SAT II: 790 US History, 780 Math Level 2

GPA: not sure, but unweighted will hover between 98/100 and 99/100

Rank: 1/180 (school is NOT competitive by any means, haven't sent a kid to an ivy/top 25 in at least five years)

Extracurricular Activities:
-Trumpet (~10 hrs/wek)... principal chair of youth symphony, section leader of concert band, all county, area all state, nyssma, paid performances, private lessons, and I'll submit a recording

-Piano (~5 hrs/week)

-Peer Leadership (~4 hrs/week) (service organization) co-president

-Yearbook (~2 hrs/week) co-editor

-Honor society (3 hrs/week) coordinator of tutoring program

And other stuff like mathletes, student council, etc but I'm not mentioning that...

Summer activities:
-summer school classes, before 11th grade
-psychology course at community college, before 12h grade
-local volunteer program to promote literacy/involvement in music, before 12th grade

Standard awards like perfect attendance, "student of the year" in a bunch of subjects, bausch and lomb award from U of rochester, will get nat'l merit scholarship commendation, semifinalist if they drop the cut off by ONE point :(

I would study History at the college...

Anyway, assuming reccomendations and essays are on par with everyone else, am I a likely ED admit?? thanks...

dude, ur chances are EXCELLENT. Good luck. Your credentials are great. You got a 1500 man, nice stuff, i got in with a 1450.

Really? Is the fact that I go to a crappy high school (>50% go to community college) going to bring down my chances? Also, I thought CAS is really selective...

Also, what would my chances be like RD? My parents are still hesitant about the ED thing for financial reasons...

I mean in RD there are many more applicants like yourself, def amazing chances ED, but RD you should prob be okay. No, doesn't matter if your high school is not that ocmpetitive, i was valedictorian of a real bad high school with only 112 kids in graduating class and i got in

I'd say excellent chances ED. RD is anybody's guess...

Since Cornell is your number one choice, it would be best for you to apply ED. However, since your parents are the ones who it looks like will be financing your education, you should respect their decision on whether or not you can apply ED. Just talk it over with them, and make sure they are confident with ED. And even if you can't ED, you still have a shot RD. Talk it over.

I seriously love Cornell and could totally imagine it being my future college and spending four years there, but my only reservation, which I'm sure you've all heard before, is that it just seems so cut off from society... that's the only thing that might hold me back from applying ED (other than financial burdens). But then again, I don't want to risk not getting in anywhere RD. I think I'm going to visit the campus again in the fall, and possibly spend the night since I live fairly close. That's when I'll make my final decision...

Maybe you won't get into Cornell ED, but you will get into somewhere regular decision. Don't apply ED just b/c you are worried about not getting in anywhere, b/c you will get into somewhere and most likely it will be a good college.

thanks psqueared, I sort of needed that. I've always had a thing for cornell just because it's one of those schools that I've always known about since I was young and that I always hear my parents and grandparents talking about, so i think it's always been a comfort zone thing. When I really think about my applying ed, the more I realize that it is only for the boost in admissions and the security.

My top five choices are Cornell, Penn, Coumbia, Brown, and Tufts, and if I got into any of them, i would be ecstatic. I'm just worried I won't get into any of them, because things are SOOOO unpredictable, and then end up going to University of Rochester or Syracuse, which I really dont want...

Do you think I wouold at least get into maybe one or two of my top choice schools if I apply RD? Thanks...

dude....Penn/Columbia/Brown are REACHES for ANYONE RD...except if you are a URM, development case, legacy, athlete. These schools are getting impossible to get into. Cornell/Tufts/Northwestern/Chicago are more slight reaches/high matches for ppl like u.

not hiigh matches, no school of Cornell's caliber is a match for anyone unless you have near perfect scoresa across the board
