In or out of state? And more curious than anything, but why aren’t your recommendations that good?

Out of State - Well, they aren’t bad; its just that I didn’t really become friends with the teachers - It was more of a distant relation rather than a personal one

Got it! Well your stats are great…and your interest in Greek Mythology is really interesting as well…i believe that would make you stand out.

Tech is odd. You’d look at your stats and assume that you’d easily get in but CS is the most popular major at Tech (I think i’m right about that) and features the most highly touted programs. So while I believe you are a strong candidate, i wouldn’t put it in the safety range.

Thanks! I’m glad you thought that the Greek Mythology was interesting!

I think that the most popular major is MechE and then CS.

If you look at the Georgia Tech Common Data Set, here, https://www.irp.gatech.edu/common-data-set, Part C7 tells you what factors are considered by the admissions office, and the level of importance given to them. You will see, for example, that GPA and rigor of secondary school record are considered as “very important” admissions factors, whereas standardized test scores are considered to be an “important” admissions factor.

Also, I would spend some time reading the blog of Richard Clark, the Director of Admissions for Georgia Tech, which can be found here, http://pwp.gatech.edu/admission-blog/. One of his more informative blogs is titled “(Ad)mission: It’s Not Fair,” here: http://pwp.gatech.edu/admission-blog/2017/05/16/admission-its-not-fair/. These blogs may give you some insight into how the admissions office considers applications.

I couldn’t tell whether you are a current high school junior or senior.

Just wondering, would it be easier to enter GaTech on a major like Industrial Engineering, and then transfer into Computer Science? I’m looking at the reality here. I’m OOS - Asian - Male. (I’m a Junior)

no apply for CS, if you get in good, if not then, theres nothing you can do. FWIW, I would be surprised if you didn’t get in for CS.

You’re one of many that has written this, so don’t take what I’m about to write personally.

It really bothers me when I see people on this forum ask this question. First, I think it’s completely unethical to list a major for which you have no interest in as a way to improve your chances of admission. It’s lying. Period. No different than listing awards or ECs that you didn’t earn or participate in.

Second, I’ve seen nothing on GT’s admissions pages to indicate that admissions decisions are based on the major you indicate on the application. If that were the case, they would probably do what some other universities do and have to apply to specific colleges. I suspect that GT is aware of people doing this and may take measures to ensure that admission decisions aren’t based on the indicated major.

However, I do think that GT would like to use this information to plan for classes in the upcoming year and to ensure that enough faculty, classroom, and lab space is available. Listing a major that you plan on changing at the first opportunity (after Fall semester your freshman year) means that GT may have over-allocated resources for one major and under-allocated resources for another. This seems to be a common thread for a few specific majors, exacerbating the problem. If you list IE as your major on the application, change to CS after the Fall semester, and can’t get into the classes you need or end up in very large lecture halls, don’t complain to GT about it.

As a current student at Tech, let me just say that there is an extremely low chance that admissions decisions are based on the major you select. Why? Cause at Tech it’s extremely easy to switch majors. Therefore, students are almost certainly let in based on their stats and not their major. So don’t think it will be any easier getting in as an ISYE major instead of a CS major. In any case, keep up the good work and I’d say you have a really good shot at getting in

You’re doing great! Statistics are in your favor…but they’re just statistics. The rest is up to Ga Tech and chance. Just be sure to have a strong safety school just in case. I’m not saying that because of your grades. I’m merely saying that because it’s prudent to do so. There’s more to college then choosing the best school. It’s about choosing the right school for you. You have to consider costs with your parents, and , if you can, tour the campus and other schools for a good “vibe.” You’ll be living there for 4 years. Do you like high competition to get into the right major? Do you like being around laid back people?

Actually, my safety school is USC (south carolina) Honors College. And I already know I LOVE Atlanta because my dad lives there in the city and I got to his house often (I’m still a SC resident).

@blargenshmargen hey, i am just curious as to whether there are certain sentiments towards people who come in from conditional transfer, or anything you have heard about it. I received one (a non legacy based transfer) and plan to take it, but was wondering what you think as a current student.

I got into CS with lower stats and awards than you. Just wanted to let you know.

Apply GT distance math. It’s a DE class taught by GT professors and broadcast on line. You have 5 on BC calc and you should be admitted. All the kids in my son’s GT math class got in EA this year.

@trix do you think doing the distance math will help your chances in getting into Georgia Tech?

Yes. Almost guaranteed. It is a real freshman linear algebra and multivariables calc classes taught by GT professors here in GT. Ask your high school counselor about DE policy. All 8 credit hours are real GT college credits. My daughter also took that math online class back in high school. She is now a GT ISYE junior. With all those math credits plus APs she can co-op for one year and still graduate in 4 years.

Is Distance Math only for instate students, or can out of state students do it as well?

“Classes are taught on our campus to our own Georgia Tech students while being delivered via live video or internet feed to students in 51 classrooms at partner high schools across Georgia. You can enjoy the challenge of a college class and professor without leaving your high school.” Since I am an OOS applicant, I cannot do this.
