Chances for getting into Sophie Davis?

So I studied abroad for high school- therefore I don’t have a lot of the things some other applicants may have, for example there was no such thing as an honor roll/society at my high school, and there were no awards ever given out whatsoever. My school however was one of the top schools in the country.
Please note I am on my second gap year out of high school and only took the ACT and SAT recently, as it is not really given in the country I studied in for HS.
In addition, our 9th grade scores are not included the transcript submitted to the colleges.

I double majored in Biology, and Engineering Science.

10th grade GPA: 94.4
11th grade GPA: 97.3
12th grade GPA: 94.5

I scored a perfect 100 on all my Biology finals. Engineering science I didn’t do as well- scored an 89, and a 93.

11th grade mathematics 96, 12th grade 91 (I was placed in the highest math track in high school)

Most of my other grades range from 93-100, except for two 87’s in religious studies and ancient language.

My 5 letters of recommendation were outstanding (Some recommendors requested that I read it beforehand believe it or not! I was very impressed lol  )

I am passionate about writing and am very good at it if I do say so myself, and my teacher described my essays as “riveting”. So I am assuming that they were written very well.

Have not received ACT or SAT scores yet. However I am estimating a 1300 on SAT and 32 on ACT- I am supposed to receive acommodations however evaluator did not submit documents in time and therefore I had no time to finish and scored below my potential. I am retaking the ACT with Sophie Davis in January, with acommodations. Hopefully this will improve my grades.

Community/volunteer experience–

6 Month full time volunteer internship (approx. 48 hrs a week) in L & D at the hospital on my first gap year out of high school.
5 hours a week volunteering at the same hospital in 12th grade
Volunteered in my community with special needs children all throughout high school, even organized a free, integrated Saturday group for both mainstream and special needs.
2 full summers spent as a counselor in a camp for individuals with special needs
Big Sister for a year as part of a youth group I was a previous scout in.

I’m extremely passionate about becoming a doctor and have been hoping to get into Sophie Davis since about third grade I think!!!

Your gpa looks good. It is too hard to tell without test scores, estimates mean nothing. I think that it may be too competitive to chance you as it can go either way for anyone.

hello
i am a high school student, and i wanted to know how sophie davis looks at your regents scores. i hear some people say that your regents scores don’t matter, some say that you have to score an 85+ to be allowed (among other things), and others claim that you have to get 90+
it’s been a big debate for me and many others, and i wanted someone to please get it settled ONCE AND FOR ALL. please.
does anyone have authentic information about the importance of regents scores?

thanks

@smartkitt Sophie Davis does look at your regents scores, but you do not have to have a 85 or higher on them to be admitted. I’ve just been admitted and I didn’t have 85 and above on 3 of my regents. Sophie Davis actually looks holistically at every individual

@sabrina36 Hi, I just read that you got into Sophie Davis. I am currently a sophomore in high school and i was wondering if you could give me some tips of how to get in. In freshman year I took chem and I did pretty bad adjusting to the new school. And for some reason this year I just can’t do that well and my average is like a 91. If I do better in junior year would it help. I am currently taking science research. I volunteer in hospitals and I am part of the Science Olympiad team. Could you please please please give some helpful and detailed advice of what I should do with my current situation. Thank you

@Bubbles2016 Lol, of course, I would like to help! You sound a lot like me :). I took Chemistry freshman year too and just passed the regents, but because I worked hard to do better the following years for my other sciences it did not cost me. You should also continue doing well in all your classes. Make sure your SAT scores meet their min requirements; I have a couple of friends who didn’t apply because they did not meet this requirement. Start building relationships with teachers, coaches, and health care professionals who can write you a letter of recommendations. I took science research too and if you can try to join some local research competitions. The biggest tip I can give you is to work on your writing skills. I believe my essays really distinguished me from the crowd. Over the next two years look for something that contributes to your passion for medicine and write it down, you never know maybe that will be the backbone of a very good essay. Don’t give up hope and have faith that you can do it!

@sabrina36 Really? Well, thanks - I guess thats relieving. One of my regents scores was in the 80s…
So in addition to having good SATs and a good GPA, can you please list all of the other requirements needed to get into Sophie?

@sabrina36 Oh and another thing (sorry!) can you please please explain how you got to do research? I actually have no idea about research, where it is offered, what you do, and etc…
That would be a big help

@sabrina36 Thank you, you made me feel a lot better.

To get into Sophie you need to:
-Have a minimum grade point average of 85 through the first three years of high school
-Submit ACT and SAT scores
-Submit three essays
-Submit five letters of recommendation
My school has a research program with the University at Albany that I joined. You can still do research by yourself, there are a ton of programs for high school students with research opportunities. There are some summer programs at Columbia and NYU that have free researching but are a bit challenging to get. You can also try mentoring in medicine for research opportunities. But, you need to find what works for you. Speaking to other incoming freshmen I realized we all have different strengths and weaknesses. My strength is research. I conducted research for years and competed in state and national competitions. @Bubbles2016
