Chances for HPS, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt...

Please chance me for Amherst, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Stanford, Swarthmore, William & Mary (in-state), UVA (early action, in-state), Vanderbilt (legacy), Washington & Lee

I know, I know, it's a lot of schools. Nothing really unusual for CC though. I feel like I need to apply to a lot because admissions is such a crapshoot! I already have a pretty good idea of my chances. I'm probably pretty solid on W&M, UVA, and W&L, and have a shot at the others. Obviously HPS are high reaches. But I would really appreciate some feedback from others - especially on what my weak/strong points are.

School Type: Public + Governor's School (I go to governor's school for math and science in the mornings and then travel to regular school)
Location: Virginia
Race/Gender: Asian female :(
Prospective major: Chemistry
Unweighted GPA: 3.95? not sure exactly
Weighted GPA: 4.16
Class rank: 7/306

Because I go to governor's school for the majority of my classes, I can't actually take a lot of AP classes. The governor's school profile is attached to my transcript though, and governor's school is WAY more rigorous than the AP courses in my area.

SAT I Composite: 2220 (superscored)
SAT I Math: 700
SAT I Critical Reading: 750
SAT I Writing: 770

ACT Composite: 34
ACT English: 34
ACT Math: 34
ACT Reading: 35
ACT Science: 31 :(

Extracurricular Activities
Violin: violin (9 years), orchestra (7 years) - concertmaster this year, teacher (3 years), I play violin in my church's praise band, and play for local weddings and events
Running: varsity cross country (3 years), captain (2 years), coaches award, all-district, all-area, all-conference, all-region, club indoor track (4 years), varsity outdoor track (4 years), all-district, all-region, all-state, went to New Balance Nationals
Other stuff: started the Latin Club (president), "president" of youth group, NHS, robotics club, prom committee, probably some other things I'm forgetting

Work Experience
worked at a grocery store over the summer, violin teacher

Recommendations
Both of my teacher recommendations were pretty good. And my guidance counselor really likes me, so that's probably going to be good.

Essays
I'm ok at writing essays, but I've worked pretty hard on these, so hopefully they will help me out!

Awards
No significant awards. Just PSAT commended scholar, and some other school/local awards.

Additional Information
Basically, I don't stand out from the average Asian female...but hopefully with strong essays and a bit of luck, I'll get in! I'd honestly be ecstatic to get into any of the schools I applied to (except for W&M, UVA, and W&L - I'd still be happy about those, but it wouldn't be the best day of my life :P).

Thanks for chancing me!!

I’ll do the colleges that I have an idea about (sorry not well versed with some of them).
Cornell - low reach/high match Duke- low reach/reach Harvard - high reach (get those scores up) Johns Hopkins - reach/low reach (thankfully not a med major :D) Princeton - high reach Stanford - high reach Washington & Lee- high match

You are a competitve applicant to each and every school you are applying to.

While you may not get into all of them (ahhh Harvard and others are always reaches), you definitely have a great shot at all of them…

Only thing i feel is lacking (slightly lacking) is your extra-currics… To a point, for schools like harvard, gpa/sat are so close to eachother among applicants that decisions are sometime based on ec’s…

I hope you wrote a fantabulous essay.

Good luck…

For schools that allow me to choose whether to send SAT and/or ACT, I’m definitely sending my ACT, but should I also send my SAT scores?

Oh, and I forgot to add my shadowing/internship experience. Last semester I shadowed a pulmonologist, and this semester I’m shadowing a neurosurgeon.

Community service: (if it matters, since there’s not a spot on the Common App for it)
approximately 400 hours from mission trips, building homes in my area, playing violin in nursing homes and other local things, youth group activities, NHS, and key club

I will chance for the schools that I am more familiar with, lol.

Cornell- match/low reach
Harvard/Princeton- high reach
Stanford- mid reach
Johns Hopkins- match/ low reach
William & Mary-low match
Swathmore- match

Good Luck!

So like you said the HPS schools are always hard to get into. However I think you have a chance. Very good GPA and scores are pretty good (probably want a higher SAT however but if you have taken it 2 times I wouldn’t take it again). Also ACT seems pretty good but the science was kind of low I guess (but don’t worry too much about this). To be honest I think you have a good chance at most if not all of these places. But you should try to make yourself stand out from the typical Asian applicant or whatever (not saying you are the typical). Find a niche where you fit in. If you are a really good musician which it seems you are, then you should enter some competitions or something, but even if you do not you could write in your essay about how you played because you loved music and it brought something to your life not because you wanted to win competitions and be nationally recognized (IDK–just show your passion). All in all, I would say you have a good chance tho. HPS are most likely going to be your toughest but GOOD LUCK!!!

Cornell- match/low reach
Harvard-reach
Princeton-reach
Stanford-reach
Johns Hopkins- high match
William & Mary-low match
Swathmore- high match
