Chance me for UPENN, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, UVA, Wake Forest, and UNC

Hello Everyone!

Rising Senior here, and I am starting applications.

I plan on applying to a pretty wide range of schools, and I was wondering if you all could chance me for Johns Hopkins University, Washington and Lee, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, University of Pennsylvania, Wake Forest University, and Davidson College.

GPA: 3.98 (One B+ freshman year)

ACT: 31, with a 10 on writing. This was my second attempt. I plan on taking the ACT 1-2 more times. I have not done any tutoring for it, and I am about to start a one on one ACT prep class focusing on math and science. (my subscores are 35 reading, 32 English, 29 Math, and 27 science). I think that with this tutoring, I will be able to raise my score to at least a 32/33 if not a 34.

SAT 2: 600 Chemistry, 700 US History
Extracurriculars: Fairly standard stuff. High points are Volunteering/Shadowing at a local hospital (approximately 50 Hours), Started a charitable website, Baseball team captain, Kids to Kids facilitator (A mentoring program within my school), School Honor Council member for 11th and 12th grade, and Senior Class Vice President.

AP Scores: 5 AP US History, 5 AP English Language and Composition, 4 AP Chemistry

Please give me some feedback! Even if it is probably not what I want to hear, I need to hear it now! If there is anything else I left out, or that anyone wants to know please let me know!

Thanks in advance!

I’m pretty familiar with Cornell (I live in Ithaca and my dad works for Cornell). You’ll have no trouble getting in

Thanks Gooner10, I appreciate the feedback! If there’s anywhere you would like me to chance you at just let me know!

UPenn, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Washington and Lee are all major reaches… maybe if your family has close connections with the school your chances might be higher, but I;m guessing you don’t (since most students don’t).

Not sure why the first replier said “you’ll have no trouble getting in” to Cornell, because that is a blatant lie. There’s a reason why its acceptance rate is only 14%.

Asides the phenomenal GPA, what is special about you and your app that would influence the officers to give you the green light over other applicants?

Jarjarbinks23, this is more of the response that I was expecting. I know that these schools I’m interested in are probably reaches for me, but hey, gotta have goals. I think one thing that kind of sets me apart is connection to rural South Dakota. My fathers family is from there, and I’ve spent much of my life connecting to his family there.

Jarjarbinks23, sorry-- I forgot to say thank you!! Thanks for the detailed feedback. It means a lot, as I am feeling rather anxious about the whole process.

Just a note to anyone else, I will chance back! If anyone has any places that they want me to chance them for just let me know!

If you lived in Ithaca, you would not have an issue with Cornell. However, as you are (presumably) not in Ithaca, Cornell is definitely a big reach.

One question for you: Why these particular schools? As you note, its a wide array…what sort of major are you looking at? And do you have a geographic preference? And the CC question that everybody has: Are your family finances up for this?

Thanks HappyHelper! Is there anything that you would recommend doing to up my chances?

SouthernHope: thanks for the response! As far as a major, my interests are pretty diverse (physics/chem/economics/business). Geographically, I don’t really have a preference. I’m from KY, so going “up north” is kind of appealing to me in that I would get to experience a new area. I picked those southern schools because they are ones where friends/family have gone and I really like them. As far as the northern ones, I have family in Baltimore, and also family in up state New York. As far as financing, my parents are committed to making money not be a problem in my decision.

UPenn, Cornell, and JHU are high reaches. UNC is probably at the same level considering how they really don’t take too many OOS applicants. UVA is along the lines of UNC, but more lenient on OOS. Wake Forest, Davidson, and Washington and Lee are low matches. Just work on your ACT and you’ll be in a much better standing. :)

@kevinjuan‌ Thank you so much for the feedback… If I were to get my ACT one or two points would it help me a ton? I mean obviously I’m aiming to get it up to a 34+, but chances are that won’t happen.

Okay so when I took the ACT first time around I got a 27, just like you. My recommendation is to practice. I did 15 practices-just science section- and got a 31 second time around. Best of luck and PRACTICE!!!

@Autumn97‌ Thank you for the feedback! I am going to practice it a bunch! Hopefully I can raise it to a 31 or higher!

Realistically, 31 and 32 are on the lower end of accepted scores for most of those schools. Because of this, I highly encourage you to shoot for a 33 or 34+. I believe that with good prep that score is easily achievable.

@kevinjuan‌ I hope I can get my score up there, it would really be a huge help to my app I think
