Chances for HYPMS

well, maybe not "easier" but i've always just heard that such states are inherently less competitive. Less kids from those states apply, and top schools in their never ending quest to ensure their schools are diverse accept as many kids as they can from those states.

like i said, i may be wrong.. but i've just always heard that

They do actually have geographical location as a factor determining admissions (they as in all the top ivys) according to their material. Yea, I would definitely say Ohio has much fewer applicants compared to California, the Northeast, and maybe even some southern states. Our educational system is melting, especially my school lol. We had 3 ivy leaguers last year which may be most in a long time (but it was 2 UPenn and 1 Dartmouth). We did have our val two years ago be accepted into Princeton, but he didn't go because his dad had died earlier in the year and he wanted to stay close to his family.

Haha it depends where you are in the Midwest. Kids from Chicagoland, Cleveland, Twin Cities and other big(ish) Midwestern cities only have it a little easier than East Coast kids b/c there actually is quite a bit of competition. There were something like 15 students from my mid-size midwestern city accepted to Yale this year...not a huge number but still significant. If you're from a rural area, though, there is probably a significant advantage. Where exactly is Fairfield??

Fairfield is just southeast of Hamilton which is about 20 miles north of Cincinnati. I'm thinking about SCEAing Yale; how much do you think that would increase my chances for them?

random thought: with SAT scores like yours, I think you might qualify to be a presidential scholar. don't take my word on this though. But since there are about 300 ppl in the whole nation who get 2400's, you might have a chance

You may want to looking into Caltech more closely. Visit the campus if possible.

ugh Inverse... I probably won't be able to make it out to California until after applicationtime. Also, I may not even visit the east coast until after as well the way recent happenings are going.

Does anyone know exactly how the presidential scholar screening starts and when? I've entertained that thought myself once or twice, locospocous.

One thing I really wish I could have done as a Junior is the USA Biology Olympiad exam. I would have gotten at least semi-finalist and maybe even finalist, which would have helped me show my passion in awards. Hopefully I'll be able to get my school to do it this year though (although I'll be rusty).

again .

off second page

anyone else?

dude there's nothing more we can say. You have good chances. Just start working on those essays! That'll be what makes yoou stand out, because everything else is already there.

I personally think that you're totally right about your eagle scout thing. As of now, your ECs are extremely weak, and are bundled in math and science, with a few small, extremely common things thrown in (church/boy scouts). You've got no sports, no arts, really very few things outside of academics. That'd be totally fine if your academics shown, but they don't. You're gonna hafta rely on stellar essays and recs to get you into maybe 1-2 of your reaches. Sorry if I'm coming off a little harsh, but I think that's the reality of your situation.

As for chances:
Harvard - high reach
Brown - high reach
Yale - high reach
Stanford - high reach
Princeton - high reach
Dartmouth - reach
University of Pennsylvania - reach/high reach
MIT - reach
maybe Caltech - reach
OSU - safety
BYU - safety
perhaps Miami University: Ohio - safety

You should definitely look into some more middling schools, such as Northwestern, Lehigh, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, John Hopkins, etc.

BTW, I would take these off your list. They're mean absolutely nothing to adcoms and are borderline scams. Search google for more information on these ...
National Society of High School Scholars
Who's Who
National Honor Roll

What more do you want? Your test scores and GPA are impeccable. Your ECs could be better but they are decent. HYPMS are all reaches, but I'd expect you'd get into at least 2 of them. You have a good chance at Caltech if you show you love science. Midwest is a plus, but since it's Ohio, it's not that big a plus. I would add many middling schools and take out unneccessary reaches, incase of bad luck. On that note...Good Luck!

total crap shoot! Too many variables to predict acceptance at these top colleges, including how many other kids from your school apply. You have great credentials, but it is literally like the lottery.

completely agree w/ prospective md

Now it just depends on luck, recs and essays
