@aunt bea i agree with you but, OP has a 2180 SAT and 800 Math 2.

talking for UC’s btw, not ivies.

What major by the way for OP ?

@meriks Biochemistry for the UCs and UIUC, and Mathematics for all the others.

@meriks
I already posted my crappy stats earlier on this thread, but members here have unanimously agreed that my results make no sense (though I think my results make sense), so I will tell you the crappy stats of someone else I know.
2170 SAT score
800 on SAT Math II
750 on SAT Physics
Around 3.4 unweighted GPA and 4.0 fully weighted GPA
AIME qualifier (I’m not sure whether this or OP’s UKMT gold is more prestigious)
Rejected by UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, CPSLO for computer science

The UCs do not care much about test scores, so OP’s 2180 SAT score and 800 SAT Math II score will not help him/her much.

@wldb15 I thought the minimum for SNU was 80…

@"aunt bea" i retook the SAT and am pretty certain to raise my superscore to 2300…would that enhance my chances?..and I can afford these colleges ( with some financial constraints, but I could make it)…and I have applied to Purdue and UIUC which I assume I should have a good shot at getting into…Are there any others that you would suggest as safeties?

@Unitize No… It’s definitely not. Most people I know of and got into SNU has a minimum of 116 or so

@wldb15 I’m Korean, and my Korean-American cousin got in to SNU with a TOEFL of 100 (3 years ago, after getting a graduates from Duke)The acceptance level is like getting in to Harvard for people in Korea, but for international students its something like Georgia Tech, Cornell, UCLA where anyone with above average stats and a solid EC can get in.

@Unitize oh yes that’s right for international students but I’m not an international student for Korean universities.

@meriks, please reread posts 7, 12, 13 and 24. A score of 2180 for a UC is not competitive for Berkeley, LA and SD. The students who actually got into LA and Berkeley had scores in the 2300’s. You’re looking at averages which includes: athletes scores, alliant “neighborhood-pact” high schools, and physically challenged scores. You won’t be compared to those students. You will be compared to incoming, top-tier students. My students needed to get scores over 2250 to be considered. Combined scores matter!

@michaelite, yes, anywhere near 2300 will get you consideration at those hard-to-enter schools, as well as possible merit-based funds.

@aunt bea look at the number of applicants accepted at UC’s. Look at SAT percentiles. Look at the number of accepted athletes and handicaped. Do the math. And… You’re wrong.

Remember admissions are holistic as well.

@meriks
I find it silly that you and aunt bea choose to focus on SAT scores as if they are more important than GPA. I doubt athletes, students from special high schools, and other special students have the ability to bring the average SAT score of UCB and UCLA down from 2300 to 2071 (UCB) or 2067 (UCLA). From what I have observed, the UCs do not seem to care much about test scores. However, I do agree with aunt beat that wldb15’s stats are not competitive for the UCs because wldb15’s GPA is too low.

http://www.theaggie.org/2008/07/21/uc-study-shows-sats-do-not-predict-college-success/

My 2300 SAT score did not help me much. I was rejected/waitlisted by UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, and CPSLO because my GPA (4.00 capped UC) was awful. But my GPA is a lot better than wldb15’s GPA.

@Mangiafuoco I hope this is true cuz I have taken 10 ap classes and finish with almost all As in a competitive school. My uc gpa is 4.2 but my sat is 1690 lmao.

I think that NYU and UIUC are matches and Notre Dame might be as well. However, if you get your GPA up, UCs could be a match as your ECs don’t really stand out. You never know with Emory because a really good kid from our school was recently rejected. UWash is a high match And wow if you can get a 7 in Math HL, the world needs more people like you Chance back? <a href=“Chance me for Vassar I'll chance back :) - Vassar College - College Confidential Forums”>Chance me for Vassar I'll chance back :) - Vassar College - College Confidential Forums;

Could you please have a look at my GPA from 10th grade onwards and tell me how they would seem like to the admissions people?

10th grade:
English 5/5
Creative Writing 7/7
German IB Prep 5/6
Geography 6/5
World History 6/5
Math 10 High 7/6
Chemistry 5/5
Health 6/6
PE 6/7

So overall 10th grade GPA: 3.3/4.0

11th grade (IB):
Biology HL 7/5
English B HL 6/6
Geography SL 5/5
Korean A Lit SL 5/6
Music SL 5/5
Math HL 6/6
TOK 6/6

So, overall 11th grade GPA: 3.2 (unweighted) & 3.6 (weighted)

11th Grade (AGAIN- I repeated because i had to change subjects at a late time):
Biology HL 6/5
Chemistry SL 6/7
English B HL 5/6
Geography SL 6/6
Korean A Lit SL 6/6
Math HL 7/7
TOK 6/5

*Unfortunately got a bunch of strict teachers :(

So, overall repeated 11th grade GPA: 3.5 (unweighted) & 3.8 (weighted)

12th Grade (I’m in the middle of semester 1):
Biology HL 7
Chemistry SL 7
English B HL 6
Geography SL 5
Korean A Lit SL 6
Math HL 7

So, overall 12th grade GPA: 3.6 (unweighted) & 4.0 (weighted)

Oh wow I think it definitely has an upward trend The 7 in Math HL, as I said stands out as it’s one of the toughest IB classes so that’s a huge plus As it is an upward trend, I think your chances are somewhat higher Good luck

I’m not sure how your high school calculates GPA, but I am assuming that those 5, 6, 7 numbers reflect your grades in your classes. Your school’s GPA is out of 7 points, so you had to convert your GPA so that it is out of 4 points. You have not taken all your exams yet, so those numbers cannot possibly represent your scores on the exams. Perhaps these numbers are predictions of what you will receive on the exam. You think you will receive a 7 on the Math HL and English HL exams but there is still a possibility that you will not.

I do not know about international students, but I do not think UCs care much about IB exam scores. Those exam scores are only for college credits and do not significantly increase your chances of admissions. HL math is not very impressive in my opinion. I took it, but most of the UCs rejected/waitlisted me. I know students with a 7 on IB Further Maths (several times harder than HL Math), but I do not think it helped improve their chances much for the schools that they applied to.

@Mangiafuoco My prediction of my grades (the two 7s) are based on my mock exam results. But I kind of really really feel scared by hearing your story.

Oh and yes. My school doesn’t calculate GPA so I just changed it to out of 4.0.
To be specific, our school grade recommended correlation scale is:
7=A+
6=A
5=B
4=C
3=D
2/1=F
