I've been recommended the music program at UMich by several teachers, but I have a ridiculously low GPA of about 3.0 due to various obstacles and difficulties at home. My SAT score, being less than 2000, does not meet the school's standards either.

Will it be impossible, even with a good audition/essay/rec? One person has suggested sending my application in early, but I somewhat doubt that will make a difference.

The criteria for School of Music are different than other schools at UM. Basically they have a cut-off of 3.0 and 1100 (old SAT) you need to meet to get an audition. After you meet the minimum standards it is all based on the audition.

My son is a UM freshman in Jazz Studies and had a 3.2 GPA and about 1950 on SATs. He got a great merit scholarship, too.

I second mom55's comments. The cut off for the music department is 3.0. My daughter was accepted to audition in the Musical Theater program with a 27 ACT.

One thing I can promise you. If you DON'T apply, you will NOT be accepted.

I even think I remember hearing that the cut-off of 3.0 is not absolute; they may consider something slightly lower if you have other qualifications.
