Worried we should have had a safety school, so any insight the community has would be appreciated.

My daughter is applying to 9th grade next yr. She is a high honor roll student, and three sport athlete (hockey, field hockey, lacrosse). Great teacher recommendations, as well as recommendation letters from college coaches for each of her sports.

Interviews went great, and she's received hand written notes from 2 schools saying they were looking forward to reviewing her application.

But SSAT...horrible. 47th percentile. Her school doesn't utilize standardized tests, so she had zero experience, and clearly I should have had her do more than the practice test that comes with the application. Oh hindsight....

Also, I am NOT applying for financial aid.

So whats the community think? Does she have any chance?

what schools is she applying to
and you said that she has two recs from college coaches
you should email the coaches with her resume also does she have good grades in school as this might offset the bad ssat

if she is really good at hockey then sell that too the schools
i know the recs are included in the apps
have you previously talked to coaches at her visits just because they are included in the app doesnt mean the coach will see them

you should write the coach with her resume and that she is applying to the school

hockey is a big thing at BS as im sure you know
i dont really know about other schools but choate definitely accepts hockey players that fall way below normal academic requirements they’re boys so i dont know what it is like for girls but im guessing that it has a big pull

have the coaches called or emailed since then because then they would be showing interest in her.

well they combo of lax and hockey is possibly the best sports you can play if you wanted to get recruited
btw im getting recruited for soccer so i am not making stuff up

have u talked to the coaches? the problem is (i dont know how good your daugheter is) there are lots and lots of kids who are good at those sports and applying at higher grade levels. again idk how good ur daughter is but a sophmore repeat or pg is looke more favorly upon then an 8th grader even if they had great recs. also regarding the grades things… ssat is pretty important. its the only thing schools have to compare students with each other

I didn’t really take the time to add a safety, and I don’ think that you have much time to do so (unless the school has a longer deadline for boarding students, in which case she would have to board to meet the deadline). Your SSAts scores are pretty mediocre, not to be negative. Explain to the interviewer, even email them if you have to, and explain the school’s standardized testing issue. If your daughter has good grades and has consistently landed a spot on honor roll, the SSATs should hold her back terribly. Also, has she done any community service? That would be helpful putting down on your application if she has participated in any, since that could help take the edge off of the bad SSAT score. Hope that helps! :)

Well, obviously she is well rounded, but there is a major problem with her SSATs. I know a ton of people on this board say that if you’re well rounded, have good grades, ec’s, recs, etc. your SSAT wont play that big of a role. But seriously, If Andover and Exeter have average SSAT’s of 93 and 90, there would only be a handful of students lower than 70%ile. And those students are also probably three sport varsity athletes, with amazing community service and essays and whatnot, so unless everything other than your SSAT is near perfect, its a long shot. sorry

Looking for the honest views of the board, so thanks.

Does anyone think that since we are paying full fare that that helps? I know they have a lot of high score students who parents are paying full fare, but I have no idea how many or if it even helps.

Well, some schools like Andover are need-blind, which means that a candidate applying for FA has the exact same chance of someone who has no need for it. Andover is for sure, and I think Exeter might be, I don’t know about deerfield
