Chances for NROTC scholarship - Marine Option

I am a senior currently in the process of filling out the application. I have an unweighted GPA of 3.9 and a weighted GPA of 4.15. My current ACT score is 30 with a 10 on writing but I am planning to retake the test one more time. By the end of senior year I will have taken 9 AP classes, and so far I have not scored less than a 4 on any of the AP tests that I have taken. For my extracurriculars I have JV cross country and alpine skiing. I am the web editor for my school newspaper, and I am a member of Young Life(Church Organization). I only have about 20 hours of volunteering at a rehabilitation center for people with disabilities. Also I have taught myself multiple programming languages to the point where I have become fairly proficient in them.

I intend to major in Computer Science and my senior schedule includes Art of Film, AP Comparative Govt, AP Psychology, AP Economics, AP Physics, and AP Calculus BC.

I also workout after school in the fitness center during the spring and on my own during the other seasons. My PFT is around 275.

Also would majoring in Computer Science (tier 2) hurt my chances?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Grades and classes are good. Work on your PFT score.

Ya I need to work on running but i’m doing cross country so that should bring my score up.

Shoot for 20 pull ups.

Question for anyone familiar with the NROTC Marine option application:

The on-line app instructs applicants to fill out information on three references…Counselor/Admimistrator, Teacher confiming english proficiency, and Other (teacher, coach, employer).

Local USMC recruiter told my S that he needed a counselor, an english teacher, and a math teacher. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, is the applicant required to print out the reommendation form and deliver it to the respective teacher, or are the forms online? If online, where?

Thanks!

I’m pretty certain my S printed out the recommendation forms, put them in individual envelopes and took them to each teacher. I would think that would help to expedite the process.

Thanks. S submitted the app, but can’t seem to get any straight answers form the USMC. Officer coordinator doesn’t answer emails or return phone calls. Local enlisted recruiter is clueless on how the NROTC app works. Dissapointing to say the least.
Can’t seem to find the blank recommendation forms anywhere on the website. Just wondering if anyone with experience with this has any advice? He’s hoping to have his package 100% complete prior to unpcoming interview.
Thanks again!

The Officer Coordinator will call to schedule the initial interview. For my son, this interview also included the photo and the PFT. The Coordinator sends out the recommendation form links to the email addresses that were provided on the online application. My son’s Coordinator also mailed hard copies to a couple of the teachers as he was concerned they may have trouble with the link. My son submitted his application on June 9. His first interview was scheduled for the end of July, and his second interview took place by phone just a couple of weeks later. His teachers returned their recommendations promptly over the summer. I believe that his package was complete by the end of August. Hope this information helps.

When I applied for the Navy ROTC scholarship, my recruiter told me the same thing - that that spread of teachers (English, math, counselor) gave them the most well-round picture of you.

S did the first interview and PFT. I still have little confidence in the recruiter/coordinators and doubt his package will be in order when it gets to the board. None of them are consistent on which recomendations are required. I think he was told that a counselor is not required, although the web site clearly asks for one.

My son applied for a AFROTC scholarship last year - while not exactly the same, I understand the hoops there are to jump thru. I’d go by what the website says.

And if you haven’t already, check out serviceacademyforums.com - lots of helpful posters who are very knowledgable about the application processes

I already can do 20 pull ups. I just need to bring my 3 mile time down. But does it also help to send in the application early when the deadline is in january?

Yes. The earlier you send it in the more boards you get submitted to. So the better your chances.

One thing to learn now is that “on time” is LATE
