Chances for NYU Tisch Film (Good Portfolio, Bad Grades)

Hello there!

My name is Chandler, and I'm coming up to crunch time for college admissions. Any matter, my mind turned to the idea of actually getting into NYU Tisch's College of Film. I'm in an interesting predicament, in my opinion.

(For those who don't know, Tisch's admissions are 50% Portfolio / 50% Academics)

My portfolio is very strong; I believe it is vastly stronger than most. I am very lucky for that because I have simply met the right people. Here's some information:

-400+ hours of on-the-job filming and editing experience
-Employed (Filming/Editing/Photo Editing/Photography) by prominent Producer/Actor/Model (Disney, Universal Studios, CosmoGIRL, ELLEgirl, Simon Malls, and more)
-Directed, Filmed, Wrote, and Edited various news pieces and documentaries
-President of my school's TV Production class

I'm very grateful to be getting these opportunities, and already being paid well to do them at only 17. That is why I'm saying that I believe I have the portfolio section nailed for Tisch. However, my academics do lack quite a bit compared to NYU's average:

-GPA: 3.2
-SATs: 1710

So, as you can see, it's an odd predicament. My portfolio is very good, but my grades are not. Doing a quick search on College Confidential, "Chances Threads" pertaining to getting into NYU Tisch are opposite of mine: "Good grades, poor portfolio".

Any thoughts into this would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!
Chandler

I was in somewhat of the same boat with the poor academics (not gonna get into details, but had a lower GPA than you but higher SAT). I submitted my work and experiences to NYU and got accepted into Polytechnic. I think that if they do look at your work and if they really like it, they probably will just skim over your academics. At least that is what probably happened with mine this winter. Not sure how it goes for Tisch.

@sergeydgr8 Very interesting to hear, thank you! Your statement shows that NYU does look at the whole person, and not just your GPA like most other colleges.

Polytechnic is harder to get into then Tisch, or so I’ve read. Tisch actually has a bit of a reputation on the web as being a bit lax on admission denials.

Anyways, congratulations on getting in man! And thank you so much for your reply!

Sure thing. Good luck on your app!

Also, try to see if you can get ANY financial aid. NYU is known to be a pain in the ass with their tuition and nearly non-existent financial aid.
