Chances for NYU

Im getting sick of the college i'm at right now. I really want to go to NYU. It's been my number one school. I want to apply as a communications major, but the school I'm at offers it but its brand new and the teacher who run it is an dumba**
HIgh school GPA: 3.6
College GPA: 3.67-30 credits (trying to get a 4.0 for my fall and spring semester).
SAT 1: They were really horrific so i hope they dont look at it as much.
SAT 2: Never took them
EC: Volunteer, Worked, German Club(high school).

if your SAT score was 'really horrific' don't bother. they will look at it. it is required to be submitted for a reason. sorry i cant provide better news.

If you're a communications major, you'd be applying to Steinhardt, correct? If you were CAS or Stern, I'd say it might be a lost cause. However Steinhardt's significantly less selective than other NYU schools (not to say it's any worse or better than the others, just less competitive when it comes to admission). Get your GPA up and you'll have a solid chance.

How horrific is "really horrific" btw? It might not be that bad. The more college credits and the higher your college GPA is, the less your SATs and HS stuff will matter. If you're a junior transfer with a high college GPA, they won't hold it against you.

If you can get your GPA up over a 3.75, and partner that with a good essay and recs, I think you stand a good chance at admission.

by horrific i mean 1000/1600. When I called them to asked them why i got rejected this year. They told me it was because of my grades. They never said anything about my SAT scores. I am applying to gallatin.

Why Gallatin? Steinhardt is the school of communications and some other stuff.

Eh, I think "because of grades" is the answer they give everybody who asks. I think with another year (and a higher GPA) you'll be in good standing.

hey nyu44~ r u an incoming sophomore? I'm applying to stern, which is really competitive. So any suggestions?
my stats:
SAT I:1990 (CR 560 Math 800 WR 630)---kinda low, I know
SAT II: Math II 800 Physics 760 Chemistry 800
GPA 3.927 (fall 3.856 spring 3.984)
don't really have strong EC; worked, MUN

qiuwanying, what school are you transferring from? You have a good shot with those SAT II scores and GPA but this is Stern, so lack of ECs and relevant work experience could hurt.

qiuwanying I'm going to be a sophomore when i apply to NYU again. The only suggestion i can give you is work really hard on first semester grades, cause sometimes if its too low, they wont even ask you for your second semester grades and reject you on the spot.

jk_91, I'm from boston college.

nyu44, I'll be a sophomore, too. I had decent grades in freshman year, but I'm kinda worried cuz i'm taking some hard courses next year

qiuwanying, i would suggest go on ratemyprofessors.com and find the easiest professors that teaches the classes you want.

thx nyu44. We have a similar website in BC and I already did some research and asked some upperclassmen.

Hi there.

I'm thinking of applying to Stern at the end of this year, so I'll be a junior even though I'll attain junior standing a semester earlier.

College
GPA: 3.85
EC's:Working at the department of resident life, Worked at a Financial health care company.
Honors Program at the University of Maryland

High School
GPA: 3.5
SAT I: 1170..yeah pretty bad.
SAT II (Math): 590
SAT II(Physics): 610

I'm planning to do an internship over the winter and summer and possible bring my GPA up.

How are my chances and..how can I improve? Also, I know my high school record isn't that great. That's because I moved as a junior in high school from a different country. It was hard to get my credits transferred and to adjust.

Also, how important are high school grades when you apply at the end of sophomore year of college?

Thank you.

peppermint001, your college GPA is decent enough.
I'm an international student and my HS record doesn't even match the US grading system. I assume that HS record and SAT is not that important as long as you have outstanding grades in college and great recommendations.
So r u an incoming junior now? kinda confused...

qiuwanying:

No I am going to be a sophomore but will be applying at the end of this year. So, Fall 2009.

Thanks for the reply! :)

I know what you mean. I moved from India and it was so hard to get my grades transferred. It's completely different and was a huge hassle and very confusing.

Yeah, I don't think high school stats and SATs really matter for junior standing applicants so I don't think your test scores will kill your chances.
