Looking at the average stats for OSU, I would guess you should be admitted. However, I would apply early.

How early? I plan on applying late November…because I’m retaking the ACT October 22.

That is late. I’d apply as soon as the Fall 2012 application is online and send any updated improved ACT scores later if needed.

Alright, I’m not an expert on these college apps things. I have a few questions.

They are actually available now. If I sent my app in now, and they deny me what happens? Can they change their mind about it if I send in an updated score? Can they accept me even if they denied me the first round, or is it a final decision?

With your stats, they’ll either accept you or you’d be deferred. If deferred, it means they will reconsider you later. If you then submit greatly improved scores, it will help.

On the other hand, if your application is completed in December/January with substantially better test scores, you might get in if there’s room. But if your scores aren’t greatly improved, you may be deferred or rejected becasue it will be getting late in the game and the first round of acceptances will have already gone out. Things move quickly.

The first acceptances roll-out in December I think, and housing applications start going out in January. Don’t wait until December to apply is all I am saying.

Anyway, that’s just my opinion. See what your guidance counselor recommends and then call OSU Admissions to get their thoughts. I have found them to be very helpful.

Are you in-state? They only take a certain amount of OOS applicants so take that into account.

Ok…I will talk to my counselor and OSU Admissions.

And yes I am in-state.

Thank you :)

Average ACT is over 28 and creeping up to 29. Plenty of people with a 27 get in, and plenty with a 27 don’t. Honestly, you’re completely on the fence. Get the ACT up a point or two, and I think you’re a solid admit.

Retake the ACT. Take the SAT. Apply early. Those are my suggestions.

Apply ASAP. The worst thing that can happen is that you get deferred. That being said, retake the ACT and try to up your score a few points. I know a few people that weren’t accepted into tOSU with 26-27 ACT’s. However, I do know someone that got in with a 22 ACT and average GPA with no hook. Maybe the essay counts for more than you think!

I think you stand a very good shot of getting in. Would you be willing to go the Newark campus? I have heard that they have many kids go there if they don’t get into Main campus. You go there for a year and then transfer to Main. Are you looking at any other schools. OSU is one of just many wonderful schools.

Since you are in state, I would think you’d be accepted minimally at one of the regional campuses. Mansfield campus seems to be the favorites for kids who intend to transfer to the main campus after a year because the classes offered are more general and you can get some general ed requirements done while you are there.

After doing a visit at OSU, I now know that they value the rigor of high school curriculum highly. I see you are taking 4 APs this year? How many have you taken before this year? How many does your school offer? Also, what is your class rank?

I am retaking the ACT one more time in October. I know I can get higher than a 27. I really don’t want to go a regional campus  that would make me soooo upset haha. My alternate is Miami, which I’m pretty sure I can get into?

I’ve taken 1 honors course sophomore year and 1 AP junior year. That’s pretty much it. I’m taking 4 this year.

Also, does the fact that I am Asian-American help with admissions?

asian american = negative

I’m asian, all our brothren are going to ivies :(

I think you could get into Miami.

So being Asian American will work against me in colleges? :(

And yes, I’m pretty sure I can get into Miami, but OSU is my top pick.

If you are a member of an over-represented minority which is often the case for Asians, it can hurt. However, OSU doesn’t have a ton of Asian students so I doubt it’d hurt.

So I have a good shot at this? I’ll take the ACT one more time just to solidify a spot.
