chances for poli @ UCs, CMC DC schools

I'm a California CC student applying to the UCs (Cal, LA, SD, SB) and several other schools, Georgetown and Claremont McKenna topping my list for the private colleges (possibly also applying to George Washington U, NYU, Boston College, USC.) I'm wondering if I have any realistic chance at getting in to these schools.

major: poli sci (public policy emphasis)
GPA: 3.68
ECs: Speech & Debate (fairly competitive in several events, and I coach a HS program,) Campus Poli Sci Assoc (Pres, founder,) Public Issues Forum (Pres, founder,) work on an academic book critiquing US politics which will be published, internship w/ county judge, working on a congressional campaign (write position papers, college liason,) Alpha Gamma Sigma, Honors Program, Service Learning, Instrumental Music, Mock Trial and JSA in HS, occasional work with a few advocacy groups, interning in DC this summer
Work Experience: part-time jobs since I was 15, 2 years with current company (4 promotions, acting general manager for a while, currently working in lower management to focus on school... lots of prof experience for my age)
Gap in Ed: took a year off to focus on work and help my father who has been seriously ill
Essay: Will be above average
*Will interview with the private schools, should go very well.

I feel that I have a good story to tell with my life experiences and extra-curricular involvment, but I don't know if I make the cut. My TOP CHOICE is UC Berkeley, but I'm being realistic, I know it's highly competitive (as are Georgetown and CMC- and all of the others!) Do I have a shot?

Can anyone tell me where these rank as reaches, matches, safeties, etc?

Almost forgot, TAP for UCLA.

Thanks!

I have pretty similar stats (3.78 gpa and IGETC certified) and will be applying as poli sci also. I think we have a good shot at most UC's. Your'e right though Berkeley will be a longshot just because of the amount of people that apply each year. They have a chart on their website that shows a big increase in the # of people who apply each year coupled with a slight decrease in admission. I think for the schools you listed matches would be:UCSD, UCLA, Boston College, NYU with your safeties being :USC UCSB and the reaches: Claremont, Georgetown, CAL, George Washington.

What do you think of my schools?: (I do have several ec's and a solid history of volunteering)
UCLA
USC
MIchigan
Florida
Miami
Texas
CAL
Maryland (College Park)
Occidental College
Virginia

Mexbruin, thanks for your input.

I don't know much about schools outside of California, but I think Cal should be fairly safe for you with that gpa- maybe not a safety, but pretty likely that you'll get in as a CA resident if you have a few ECs. As for applying with poli sci, we are technically only competing with other applicants for the College of Letters and Sciences, but they will look to our gpa for our lower div major requirements as a measure of achievement/dedication to our field. I also assume that they will be pretty critical in this respect because poli sci is impacted.

I think LA looks good for you, particularly if you are involved in an honors program at your college. USC is getting a lot more competitive for freshman; I'm not sure if it's changed much for transfers, but you have a strong gpa.

Just my take on those schools, I'm far from being an expert. :) I'm not sure about the other schools- good luck!
