Chances for Rice, UF, UM, & UVA?

I'm currently a senior right now, and I'm wondering if I would even have a chance at all for the above schools (Rice, UF, University of Miami, and UVA). I might even apply to Vanderbilt just for giggles because I know that it is a longshot. I have applied to some in-state schools and have gotten in and have been offered scholarships, but I'd rather go to one of these. My dream school is Rice, but I'm not even sure the admissions offices would even try to look at my application.

For high school, I have a 3.66 unweighted and a 4.96 weighted GPA. I also have a 4.00 unweighted college GPA because of dual enrollment. My sat score is 2050 (720 CR, 620 M, 690 W) and ACT is 30. I am in the top 5% of my class, with about 400 students. In previous years I took 7 AP classes, and I am currently taking 6 AP classes right now. I wish I could have taken more, but in my school, no freshmen is allowed to take AP classes, and no local schools have the IB program.

List of Classes Taken in High School:

9th grade: Biology Honors, English I honors, Spanish III Honors, Symphonic Band I, Algebra II Honors, World Geography Honors

10th grade: AP World History, Chemistry Honors, AP Spanish Language & Comp, Symphonic Band III (skipped 1 level because of playing ability), Pre-Calculus Honors, English II Honors

11th grade: AP Psychology, AP US History, AP European History, Physics Honors, AP English Lang & Comp and AP Statistics

12th grade: AP Calculus AB, AP Human Geography, AP Environmental Science, AP Government, AP English Lit and AP Art history. I also dual-enrolled and took College Algebra and got an A.

As for extracurriculars, I am currently in 2 clubs: National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. In 9th grade, I was in Key Club and my school's writing club. In 10th grade, I was still in the writing club, which later disbanded in march of that school year. In 11th grade, I got into National Honor Society and Spanish Honor society, which only admits 11th and 12th graders. In NHS, there is an activity known as Brain Brawl, quite similar to Quiz Bowl, and I joined it last year in 11th grade and still am in it. Last year, I also got invited to be on one of my school's National History bowl teams, and at the state championship, my team qualified for Nationals. I unfortunately don't have a leadership position in any of my clubs, and have been unsuccessful in my quest for being a class officer or in SGA.

Volunteering has been okay for me. I have about 300 hours, mostly from volunteering with my church to do charity stuff or working with the local library in the children's section to help promote literacy and participating in summer festival activities for the children. I also have quite a few hours from volunteering by tutoring students at school in the ESE department. .

My biggest disadvantages overall might be that I don't play a physical sport (Hey! Being in academic competitions means that I need to be mentally active), my lack of a leadership position, and for Rice, my SAT scores.

My biggest advantages might be that I am a minority (Hispanic) and I'm a female and that according to my current and past English teachers, I wrote a very good essay for Common App. I also have decent grades, I think, and they are all A's, B+'s or B's. I may also have an advantage over other students when it comes to UF because Florida has a policy of prioritizing Florida students in the top 10% of their class. I may have an advantage over other students for UM because I'm a legacy through my dad, and he teaches in the law school.

Please let me know. Thanks!

I also retook the SAT in December and am waiting for my scores. Should I also add what I got on each AP exam? Sorry that it’s so long, by the way. I’m just really nervous, and college app deadlines are coming soon. I’m really stressed about this, and I guess you can tell my how long and rambling my huge, first post is. Thank you so much!

I don’t know much about the admissions stats for Rice or UVA, but I would think you have a good chance at both UF and U of Miami. Good luck!

Since I’ve only gotten 1 reply, I’ll add my AP scores.

AP World=4
AP Spanish Lang=5
AP Euro=5
AP English Lang=3
AP US History=4
AP Psych=5
Ap Stats= 3

Not impressive, I know. I’m hoping that this years’ results will be better.

Match - UF, UMiami

since legacy and in-state.

Thanks! How do you see the other schools in terms of reach or match, and level of reach or match?

Are you thinking Rice is an easy school to get into? Because you have it listed with other comparatively “easy admission” schools.

I would say you are a reach for Rice.

Good luck with your collegiate career though.

No not at all. I don’t consider any of the above easy admission. On the contrary, I’ve been told by many people that I have low chances for Rice, UM and UVA, and that UF is rather unpredictable.

I’d say UM and UF are very possible. Rice and UVa are definitely reaches.

That’s what I’ve been told. I know it isn’t a science, but how much of a chance, percentage wise, do you think I have of getting into Rice or any of the others listed?

Uhhhhh hmmmmm. UM and Florida probably about 80%. Rice 10%. UVa 15%.

Ouch. Okay, thanks! I appreciate it as it really gives me a reality check. :)

It’s not that you’re a bad applicant at all! You’re a great applicant! It’s that Rice prefers higher math scores on the SAT. That’s why I have it at 10% (it’s already around 15% acceptance overall). It’s actually about just as easy to get into UVa in state as out of state and RD its easier than EA. I’d take UVa and give it more of a 40-50%.

Of getting into one of those four, however, I’d say you have a 100% chance. Oh wait… You’re hispanic. Nevermind. You’ll likely be fine for all of them (no offense, but affirmative action is a really big benefit).

Changing it a 3rd time haha. UF and UM 100%. UVa 90%. Rice 60%.

Holy cow! What a turnaround in opinion! Thank you! This made my day (well, technically it’s night right now).

You’re hispanic, you’re probably in for all of them. But even if you weren’t you’d still be in excellent shape.

I’d also just try an Ivy League school for the heck of it arroz. Worth a shot.

Is the boost really that significant? My counselor told me that since hispanic is only an ethnicity (I have to put white as race), only African Americans get the real competitive edge. Huh. That’s nice to know. I do feel bad, though that the opposite is true for other races. My counselor told me that people of Asian or Caucasian descent actually have negative affirmative action, and that high GPAs and SAT scores alone are not impressive.

I just saw your post arswan. You’re kidding. I highly doubt I’d get in. Other hispanics in my school with better grades and GPAs having gotten rejected from certain schools. A girl in my school got rejected from Georgetown with 3.8 uw and 4.99 w. She had 2200 SAT and is National Hispanic Scholar

Hispanic gives you a very strong edge over non-hispanic white. As a Caucasian I would sadly know. Affirmative Action and racial quotas aren’t very helpful. :(

It doesn’t mean you’d get in (you most likely wouldn’t), you just have a much better chance than you think. You still should be a little worried by Rice, in my opinion, but it doesn’t hurt to try an Ivy just cause.

That’s really curious that she got rejected. My counselor said I would likely get in if I applied and I have around the same stats (3.9 unweighted GPA, don’t have weight). It could have been for other reasons than academics.
