Chances for San Jose State University?

Hello!

So, I'm currently attending Diablo Valley College and I'm really hoping to transfer to San Jose State University in Fall 2012. My statistics are really not that great, but I'm paying for school myself and am one of the only people in my family trying to get an education, so going to SJSU would be absolutely amazing.

I'm really nervous, however, because of all the impaction and bad news I've heard about SJSU rejecting thousands of qualified students. My only "back-up" plan right now CSUEB and SFSU, but I'm really set on going to SJSU.

I'll have a 3.1 after this semester, and I'm hoping to major in English. When I apply, I'll only have two of the Golden Four done, but I'll be taking the last two next semester.

Please don't attack me; I'm just trying to see the best way to get myself an education. Thank you!

If you will have 3.1 after this semester then you’ll have a good chance.

You need the golden four completed before you apply.

Actually, I think you will get denied at SJSU.

Diablo is in Contra Costa County. If so, I believe that is a NON-Local transfer to SJSU.

Last year, I know someone who was a NON-Local CCC transfer applicant to SJSU with a 3.3 gpa (also trying to get into English) and was denied. The student did get into SF, Chico, and several others.

I think it is good that you have a back-up plan. Your only hope is that SJSU has changed what it considers a local transfer (call and find out if Contra Costa is now “local” in terms of SJSU… if so, that would be great news).

I’m not up to date on the golden four, but I thought they needed to just be done by the end of Spring. No summer catch-up allowed. However, that is also something to verify.CC

You should have done TAG for UCD. Also if your family makes uner 80k your tuition will be covered by FA.

SMCguy you should have done a TAG with UMOM. j/k, but what pointless advice though. Admit it, you are afraid what others will think of you if go to CSUN over UCLA when you know what is the more practical decision and best for you and your development. Don’t some of you people tire on offering poor advice being mimicked here on CC?

MissRozelle, SJSU is a mess and a bureaucratic hellhole and SJ isn’t much fun or worth the cost of living or drive either. Their English dept. is good but not that good and is more busywork than actually useful and not very student friendly. SFSU has similar issues and you want to be able to expediently finish your major in 2 years tops which will be a frustrating challenge at either one of these schools, costing you thousands more.

Your best option, for practicality and flexibility plus on your pocketbook and possible sanity is CSUEB at the CONCORD campus, not Hayward. CSUEB is on the quarter system and the Concord campus offers English as a bachelors. The campus is cozy (or can take some online) and admin more student student friendly and you can even attend concurrently with DVC. From DVC you can waiver the $55 app fee and they offer a great education. They will stress a lot of critical thinking and critical writing (and even linguistic) skills while you complete your core. After that you are free to enjoy from four optional paths on what you feel best interests you. They also have interesting electives too. All the English professors are high quality from top universities like Cal, Stanford, Cornell etc. so its not like you won’t get a great English education at CSUEB. The last thing you want to do is listen to advice from insecure teens and brand name whores here on CC. Many just read marketed rankings and know diddly about education.

@kmazza Yes!! That and I also wasn’t pleased with CSUN when I went for a tour.

Eh, the college experience is overrated. One of the reasons why US Universities cost so much these days is because whiny teens wanted a bunch of amenities. Frivolous aesthetics are cool and all but letting it effect ones mood and perception of how one feeeeeels and how it effects ones focus is feeble minded behavior. This isn’t directed at you as your perception was altered on your own personal experience and treatment.

CSUN is your average commuter college with crappy food but with a nice library. Hayward State is the same way that the buildings serve a function over a mere facade. The Concord campus is quite new and growing but has that business functional feel to it although is nestled on a nice hill overlooking the local valley.

Thank you all for your input! I was planning to apply to SJSU, SFSU, CSUEB, and Sac State. My parents only make 90k/year and I’m paying for school myself, so I always through UC-anything was out of the question.

I’m also aware that I’m not considered local for SJSU; that’s why I was doubting I’d get in. I also guess I’m weary because I never hear anything about CSUEB and when I do hear something, it’s not very nice. Also, I’m definitely not looking for the ‘college experience’ - the opposite, really. I’m actually a very quiet person who is just looking for a good education and career opportunities.

My boyfriend’s sister graduated from CSUEB (Graphic Design) and seemed to like it fine, but I’m still not sure. Still kind of hoping for SJSU, but I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up.

Also, I also thought the golden four just had to be done by spring?
